A guy can have long hair and it's cool, but let a lady have short hair and she is accused of being a lesbian, why is that?

I am a professional business woman over the age of 40, my career sometimes requires that I dress like a contractor, however most of the time I'm clad in business wear ie. dresses and suits. On my off time I prefer to dress casual jeans(form fitting) and a t-shirt also form fitting.

Not necessarily always, I think it has to do with how the woman looks with short hair - there are lots of people who never get accused of that because they have very feminine faces and dress very girly. If you remember celebrities like Halle Berry or Sharon Stone when they had short hair - nobody ever said they looked butch.

Guys might not get much flack from others as women do because people have high standards when it comes to feminine beauty. It is known that a female should have beautiful long hair and to cut it all off makes her less than a woman and unattractive to guys; and a result of that gives the impression the woman is manly. But not everyone thinks like that. And if they do, it is silly to judge someone sexuality based on their length of hair without trying to get to know who they actually are. Personally I'd never been accused of being a lesbian because of my short hair. Plus I wear girly clothes and get much attention from guys just like a woman with long hair. Nowadays people wear their hair about any way they want and whoever believes in the short hair = lesbo must be living in the stone ages.

It happens to the trend that goes a long way back. In the past, guys have long hair, so its a normal thing for them to leave their hair to grow long now. As for the ladies, no ordinary lady actually cut their hair short in the past, the first few people to try may have an hormone disorder thus from then on, ladies with short hair will be rumoured to be a lesbian or something. Hope this helps.

Most of the gay men I know have very short hair.
Short hair on a woman gives the appearance of the intent to emulate masculinity.
However, attitudes toward style evolve over time and sooner or later a more unisex (or asexual) attitude towards hair styles in general will probably prevail.
Long hair on a man is more reminiscent of a hippie (or 80s) type of style than that which projects effeminence ... in the absence of tiaras, bows, ribbons, and the like.
Mostly, I think that the 'crewcut' hairstyle also known as 'butch' is the crux of the issue!

It's just a stupid social more.
It's the same reason by guys can't wear pink or carry a bag that looks too much like a purse.
Also, many icons of dashing, masculine men often have long hair--pirates, men on romance novels, etc., but I've yet to see a woman sex symbol with short hair; maybe that's why.

Nowadays most men from the north of the UK think that men who have long hair are either gay or at college to get on with a career and to obtain socially acceptable and to conform with others around them most of the men keep their hair short
As for women I don't think that it matters if you have long or short hair as it is the person that counts and not your hair

Not really, it has to do with the whole package, not just what you hair looks like. Why did someone accused you of being a lesbo? maybe because you wear baggy tshirts and jeans. and you like to get into fights and cuss alot. But i think girls can be really hot when they have short hair

Perhaps because there was always a time when men had long hair without much question thus acceptable even though few men choose to.
