'No, I'm really not interested, thank you, please take me off your list and don't call again.'
Though a friend of mine kept getting double-glazing salesmen calling her, and she eventually relented and let one of them talk her all the way into signing up for a conservatory, and giving her a quote. Then, just as he was about to take all her details, she said 'Oh, I'm only renting, and does it matter that I'm on the third floor?' They never called again...
The simplest way to get rid of them (also quite fun) is to completely throw them off their script - they have to try to stick to it, so get them as far off track as possible - ask them if they believe in God, or how they feel about poverty in Africa; you could even try talking them into letting you send them a copy of the Watchtower... ;)
The possibilities are endless!

Once you have answered the call and ascertained it is an unwanted sales call, just quietly put down the phone and leave it alone for the caller to talk whilst no-one listens.
Also with unwanted junk mail - send back the empty pre-paid envelopes leaving the sender to pick up postal costs both ways.

A reverse cell phone lookup service I have used is http://reversephone.toptips.org
Enter the number in the system and they will tell you a lot of informations about the phone number and the person who owns it.
If they have extra details you will have to pay for the report.
Free reverse phone lookup sites generally don't provide anything interesting. To get further information, money will have to be paid. The free searches do not provide much more than what can be found through the phone book.
The best thing is that you can get informations about anyone!!

You should remain calm and ask them for their name, the name of the company, their phone number, as much as you can get from them. Chances are, they will hang up while going through all this. Then say that you are going to report them to your state's attorney general, because you are on the NO CALL list. Then they will take your number off their list!
BUT ... if the call is from a company with which you do business - such as your phone company or cell phone company - they can call you under the guise of its being an informational call. (But they still want to give you info on what to sign up for!). You have to be firm and get off the phone right away - and you can't do anything but ask them not to call back. Just don't stay on these calls long; don't let them bug you too much.

many of the above are stable solutions yet once you choose slightly relaxing with those human beings do what I do: once I get an unsolicited sales or merchandising call I tell them that I only ought to bypass change the kettle off / enable the dogs in - out / answer the front door and so on and so on and only positioned the telephone down and depart them putting on!! they're going to positioned that on their show notes of their call centre and if anybody else calls you - do the comparable element!! They quickly get the message to no longer call as a results of fact they're stored putting on each and all of the time! further, in case you get direct mail that has a return envelope risk-free, submit the envelope back - empty! They nevertheless ought to pay the postage on it and if adequate human beings did that they could deliver fewer of those mailshots out!

Just say..."I know where you live, if you continue to hassle me with unwanted stuff. I will burn your house down"
Only joking....There's a number you can ring which registers your tel no with BT. This is meant to stop nuisance calls. It's in the front section of the phone book. It explains what it does there.

Call the Telephone Preference Service. I have 3 numbers for them. Ring up & follow the prompts. This should start within 28 days & you should'nt get anymore calls. If you do, call them again & let them no. The numbers are: 0845-0700-707 0800-398-893 or 0870-444-3969. Although answers already given are helpful! Good luck.

Ask them where they got your number from. If they say the phone book, say "I'm unlisted. I want to speak to your supervisor." They'll then hang up and never ring back. Also, try www.tpsonline.org.uk - you can register to stop unwanted calls, it takes 28 days but is well worth it.

Sometimes I say 'Hold on a minute' then put the phone under a cushion for a long time with them holding. Or tell them you live in a council house - they hang up then and dont call back.
