Sure, Army personnel are trained in the basics of infantry knowledge, but riflemen that does not make them. They are not trained in the same way or to the degree that Marines are trained. Marines are definitely more proficient at their "infantry" duties than Army. I did 12 years in the Army and can say this. We basically do 8 weeks of basic training, which teaches the basic infantry stuff and then we move onto our job training. Yearly, we brush up on the "infantry stuff" and most of the time it is "pencil whipped". Which means they check the block to get it done even though it might not have actually been done. Marines don't do that kind of thing. They are always training in the basic infantry skills.

First off, if you're letting a GED discourage you from the Marines, than join army. Your heart must be 100% Marine Corps. GED is pretty friggin' common, so don't let that get in the way. Also, if you do your term as Marines, there is a chance for you to go Ranger. You will be very prepared for the school. But it's a little less realistic, ~10% success rate after the first set of weed-outs. You will be that drop out if you aren't prepared. With that said, going from army to straight ranger isn't as smart as playing it by ear and getting the best training first, Marines, then switching over. Good luck.

BCT, basic combat training is most of what any soldier needs to fight at squad level. Do they get all the training an infantry man gets, No, But an individual not infantry could at least be integrated into an infantry unit to the point of being useful, and while they recieved on the job training :)

Yes, every Marine does have to qualify yearly with their rifle and Physically. Have you seen a fat Marine ? And no, the other branches of the Armed Services only have to qualify job specific. A cook in the army does not have qualify but would have to if he were in the U.S.M.C. . Everyone in the Army does have to qualify to graduate basic training, but after that it would depend on their MOS. Military occupational specialty.

It should. All personnel in the U.S. Army must go through basic training, including movement, weapons and physical training, and all personnel are expected to maintain combat readiness and effectiveness. Clerks, cooks and drivers are still expected to keep their weapons clean, maintain physical fitness, and think sharp. Coming under fire, otherwise, what's a clerk to do? Wave a pencil and say "Hey! You can't shoot at me! I'm just a clerk!" Nope. Sorry. Private Clerk, get your weapon and engage the enemy!

Yes, I am trained on my rifle. CS and CSS (combat support and combat service and support) MOSs are not quite the same as infantry, but we are given much of the same training.

Yes you have to qual on your rifle every year in the army. It doesn't not depend on your job like some poeple have said.
