I was thinking of a middle sized car, does anyone know what a good solid runner would be?

Get a V W polo or golf... 1700 is not much but you will get a good runner with a V W

An early MK4 Astra is an obvious choice. Dependable, but it's the motoring equivilent of spam. A Focus from '98 or '99 may well fall in your price range, though sales were initially slow as people struggled to warm to the then radical styling, so expect a bit less choice.

Another option is the Peugeot 306. The design is nearly 15yrs old now, but it's aged well. Don't expect the worlds best interior, but they handle nicely and it should have the ride comfort you'd expect from the French. Watch out for electrical faults though.

Should be a less tedious affair than a Toyota Corolla, which is a washing machine on wheels that happens to have a stupid front-end. Still, it is reliable though, and should last for centuries.

£1700 might not be a lot of money for buying a car, but it can stll get you some decent little runabouts.

you will not even have to spend the whole 1700 for a good car. you can buy a good car for less than that. i have done it many times. get the paper and look in the classifieds. look at everything 1700 and less. pick the ones you want to call. call about them and then if you like the person on the phone ask for directions and go see the car. then pick the one you like best. ask them after you drive it what the least amount is that they will take for it. they will go down on the price. you can make an offer on it. just tell them what you want to pay for it. most of the time you will get it for your price. you will find a good car just like i have.

I have had so many problems with second hand cars in the past especially renaults stay well clear of them.

I am told by every AA man that has towed me that they have never been called out to a toyota, i know they dont look too hot but apparently japenese cars are the best and most reliable and will never break down on you,
toyota yaris is quite nice.

trust me having a reliable car is so much more inportant than having a flash car that will cost you a fortune in repairs.
get your self on auto trader you can put your post code in and highest price you can affoard.

stay away from second hand car dealers as well I would buy private if I was you.

good luck

Best buy is a Skoda Octavia. It is basically a rebodied VW Golf with many of the same components and more space. You can get one about 6 to 8 years old for this money. Also very good is the Nissan Almera.

i think it also depends on what you expect to get from the vehicle you are purchasing, ergo...are you expecting to have it look decent exterior and interior,do you expect the vehicle to last a year or ten year's.
another point is do you have any vehicle maintenance skills not repair just maintenance.
last but not least shop ...shop ...shop.
look for as many vehicles in your price range that you can find and get too, test drive all of them if you can.
you never know where you might find a gem of a car at the price range your looking at.
don't exclude motorcycles or scooters in your search either for the fuel efficiency and the price and there are large c.c. scooters that can travel highways with great speed and distance.
good luck and happy hunting.

got to be a focus! for that money your looking at a high mile car but as long as its got history all will be well.
for an extra bit of cash you could get a nice example with average miles 80k on a s,t,v reg with air con etc for around 2.5k!!! also try to get a 3 door nice rare car!!
dont get an equivalent golf or civic as they are the same car but would will be paying at least £1000 more for the badge. and i think a lesser car

Smart cars are excellent! Alot more stable and secure than most would imagine, and you can park them anywhere! The petrol consumption is great, and inside is very spacious! I sound like a dodgy car dealer, lol. But i'm telling the truth!
