My son will be 9 next month, and he really enjoys reading the Hardy Boys books and the Magic Treehouse series of books. He also is really into sports....maybe a gift subscription to Sports Illustrated for Kids. He got that for Christmas last year and gets excited every month waiting for it to arrive.
Good luck!

I would set aside how ever much you are going to spend and then take the boy out to a store and let him spend the money on the things he wants. He will enjoy picking out a few things himself. Also you could get him a little something you have chosen to top off his day.Happy birthday to the little guy

Anything with Star Wars. Bionicles (these are legos), video games. My son loves Lego Star Wars video game (he has it for PS2). If you're not sure what the boy is into, try camping gear, flashlights, canteens, etc.

How about those science kits? They have them where you do little labe experiments and get neat reactions. They also have outdoors ones with binoculars and a camera and bug and bird facts. At nine concentrate on getting him things to go out and Do.
