I recently adopted a former stray cat from the shelter. He's a hungry boy, and inhales any food I give him. He's also expressed a liking for baked goods in that he chewed through some doughnuts I left on the counter, and won't leave me alone any time I have cereal. So here's my problem:

With the cat I had before him, I was using a wheat-based litter. I liked it: it was low dust and low tracking, had good odor control and could be flushed down the toilet. I'd like to use it with my new cat, but seeing as he likes cereal, and inhales any food I do give him, I'm worried he'll see the litter as food and not as litter. I'm currently using a mixture of the wheat litter and some clay litter, as I knew he was using clay litter at the shelter, and I wanted to ease him into it. We've had no problems thus far; he uses his box faithfully and doesn't seem interested int eating it, but there's a lot of clay litter in there. What do you think?

Old sitings confirm that cats being as clean as they usually are, never eat where they crap so do not worry...just even try leaving his food near his litter box and you will see him trying to move it himself by scratching the floor around it.. I would not worry as cats are clean and I have yet to see one eating from a litter box no matter what litter is in it.

I suggest if he's not eating it with the current mix that you continue to use this combo for at least several weeks while he gets use to the idea that there he will always be fed. Then little by little decrease the clay and as long as he continues to not eat it keep doing this until you are not using the clay. if at any point he starts to eat it you need to use less of the wheat based. worse case scenario you have to change what you prefer to keep him healthy... but it sounds like you are on the right track.
good luck!

Just mix slightly more of the wheat into the clay every time you change the litter. He will soon get the message.

My kitten started eating the wheat litter, but only when it was fresh. I ended up switching back to clumping clay because of the cost of the wheat anyhow.

oh wow go for it! you poor girl- you totaly wasted time! cats(unless sick) will NEVER eat out of their litter box-they are very clean animals by nature-as a matter of fact-if they werent assigned a litter box- they would give themselves a designated area to go in.....the only times when a cat messes outside of his box is if it is dirty, or if hes angry at you-cats are wonder fuly clean- theyll even tell on themselves after an hour or so if you dont get to cleaning the mess up by finding it on your own :)

Use regular clay litter that you buy at PetSmart. Why risk making your cat sick? Hopefully, he will settle down once he realizes that there is plenty of food available.

Try putting the litter you like once in the box, while you're there, and watch what he'll do. If he shows interest in eating it, change it. If not, keep it. Cats are generally not stupid, they eat what is edible.

He is not going to eat out of the thing he poops in. I wouldn't worry.

I don't think he will eat his litter.Just keep on reducing the clay quantity he will get used to it in time!
