If you're old enough you'll remember the switch from 425 to 625 lines, then BBC2 instead of just BBC1, then it was black and whitte to colour, there wass VHS vs Betamax, and now - DIGITAL!
These are all cons by the equipmewnt manufacturers to part the great British public from their cash. Bring back steam radio!

I live about 2 miles from a transmitting tv aerial and most nights (regardless of weather) itv and channel 4 just cracks up. I use a set top aerial but channel 5 is brill. I get the impression that the new digital channels are broadcast on a lower power setting.PS i have freeview.

Heck yes, it is! Digital TV satisfies two needs:
1. The television manufacturers get to sell us new televisions again.
2. The activities of the viewer will be more easily monitored and controlled via surveillance methods used by agencies like the NSA. Like the "v" chip in newer televisions, new circuitry will allow officials unlimited access into monitoring homes and controlling what is being viewed on television by blocking out reception for broadcasts of any questionable nature. And if you don't think that this will be possible, think about the "On Star" microphones in new cars and SUVs - - the government can listen in any time they want to!!!

To some extent, yep
They can't even find enough decent stuff to fill just a few channels without resorting to "top 100s" and vote-ins
TV is loosing its way as an entertainment medium. Its trying to be all things to all wo/men and failing.
