a friend told me hotplates are impregnated with chemicals so it would make my sandwich toxic - is this true

If you have a George Forman they are very good for making Pannini. Just raise up the front of it to be level with the back so that everything doesn't slide out of it. Yumm.

I make panini in a regular frying pan and press it down with a brick wrapped in aluminum foil. I wouldn't put it directly on the hotplate.

not sure about the chems i use a frying pan to do my sandwiches yum yum (i dont use oil or butter though) just wack it straight on the pan and flip it over when it starts to smoke a little

Yes non stick coatings apprently have stuff on them that some research said they could cause cancer, so I ditched all my non-stick saucepans years ago! Why dont you grill it, or have a good old cheese toastie instead.

That is false... I would use an electric griddle, or a gas/charcoal grill.
