A couple days ago, we adopted a (pitbull?) puppy that has had a rather rough week... thrown out of a car onto a freeway in Miami, rescued by a truck driver who had her in the cab for six days, to the home of a cook at the local truck stop for two days, to our house in Missouri with four cats and a grown dog. Of course we showered her with too many treats and her food is new. Anyone surprised she started having diarreha?

I have read many excellent posts on this topic, and one theme seems to be to feed her rice. I don't happen to have any rice in the house because of my own allergies, and was wondering if I could substitute oatmeal, cream of wheat, malt-o-meal, pasta, or grits without making the situation worse?

I'll get her to the vet this week. Due to the nature of the rescue and adoption, we simply weren't ready for a puppy.

Stop ALL foods and treats that you are feeding now! Feed only this mixture to the pup for about 4 days. You will have to prepare more mixture each day.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 lb "lean" ground beef
2 cups cooked "minute" rice
Plain yogurt
Brown lean ground beef then rinse the beef with cool water in a colander to remove all juices. Put in cooked beef (no juice) in container with lid to store.
Minute rice cooked put into container to store separately from beef.
Plain yogurt in its own container.
Store all containers in refrigerator.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For each feeding in the dog's dish mix together:
2 TBS prepared beef
1/2 cup prepared rice (there has to be more rice than beef)
2 heaping TBS of the plain yogurt
Give this to the pup at each feeding. Then after the 3rd day little by little start adding dry dog food to slowly switch her back over to her regular food. The beef gives her protein, the rice is a binder and the yogurt adds a live culture (good bacteria) to her digestive tract that she needs for proper digestion. The diarrhea will stop. This really works!

When the pup is back on her feet, take her to the veterinarian for a check up and her shots.

Gosh we just adopted a puppy unexpected also, this one was almost starved to death, anyways, ya probably don't wanna give it any oatmeal, that will make it worse...eeek.

Do you have any Pepto Bismal on hand? It helps a LOT with puppy diarrhea, and will help her tummy feel better.
I think I might try the pasta, plain of course LOL. See if she'd eat any applesauce, just like a human would try for the extra pectin.

Really tho, Pepto will help A LOT

Enjoy the new puppy!

Editing my answer. I see another poster says to yes feed oats. Our puppy chewed up some sharpish plastic last week and the Vet said to feed him oatmeal 'cause it would, uh, make him poop looser to get the plastic out, so not sure!

Go with plain oatmeal for a short time. She needs a vet as you already know. and here's my advice about pet food. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Diarrhea is normal in a pup provided that it doesn't last long. His body should adjust to his new diet in about 1 week or so. You should take him to the vet anyway, to make sure he is healthy and up on his shots, et cetera.

Regarding the diet... Go and find a good brand that you can afford and feed it to him. Do not get caught in the "organic" "natural" dog diet craze. That is designed to seperate people from their money.

A LOT of dogs have been raised on all kinds of food. Stick to the commerical kind. Your vet can help you there, unless he is one of those nutty vets that think you should quit your job and do nothing but cook for your dog...

Amazing that women complained when they did all the cooking for the family, but the patiently cook for the DOG... nutty actually.

yeah you want to give her something hearty. you want to go with oats to give her some consistency as well as nurishment. but if anything, i wouldn't give her too much. i would try just plain oatmeal, just a little amount though. if you are giving her wet food, maybe that's the problem. also make sure she has plenty of water, because she may become dehydrated. maybe look into those icee pops they give babies for diarrhea.
