The drink most closely resembling the Shirley Temple was previously called a Ginger Ale Cup. In 1914, Jacques Straube wrote a bartender's recipe book which included several cocktails with grenadine. These are the earliest published references in America to grenadine as a cocktail ingredient. "FOR PARTY OF 6 PEOPLE. GLASS PITCHER Juice of 3 lemons. Juice of 3 oranges. 2 jiggers grenadine syrup. Sugar to taste. Frappe and strain into pitcher. Add 1 quart ginger ale. 1 long cube ice. Dress with fruit in season and put one bunch of mint on top. Serve in Delmonico glasses." FYI, this recipe was immediately followed by a recipe for a "Ginger Ale Cup (with alcohol)". It seems it was also common a hundred years ago to have alcoholic and nonalcoholic versions of drinks. I hope you have a great party!
