That perhaps these apparitions are the reason the Scriptures tell us to try the spirits to see if they are of God or not...

If I understand your question...I'd have to say that only God and Jesus will give us truths that we need to follow...All other "apparitions" in my opinion, don't come from the true source, so I'd say they could possibly be demonic spirits!

Assume, for the moment, that the people experiencing these things are in fact seeing a spirit of some sort. Then the question becomes, what are the spirits teaching? Is what they are teaching in keeping with Catholic and/or Christian teaching?

In every provisionally approved or fully approved case, Mary's primary message is, "Come to my Son quickly, pray more. Pray unceasingly! Pray for the salvation of the world in my son's name! Remember your devotions to me but more importantly to the Son whom I glorify above all else."

She is not saying, "Come only to me. Don't worry about my Son."

As Jesus himself pointed out -- a house divided cannot stand. If these spirits are demonic in nature, then hell is divided, for no demon would implore people to turn to Jesus, to pray more, to pray for salvation, etc.

So given the assumption that the visions are genuine, they are divine, not demonic, in nature.

Some are, some aren't. The church investigates each sighting, each crying statue and each case of stigmata to see if it's real or not. There are some cases of Mary sightings that are proven real, and some that are false. There was a case of a group in NY (that might still be opperating) that was proven false.

Possible but not probably. You have to look at the end result and the messages that come out of these experiences. They are never ones of hate or disobedience toward God. They give hope and strengthen the faith of so many. Hardly the devil at work.

your additional details are the answer I would use for your questions. I think it is very possible. I am baptist, and our preacher tells us there are counterfeit religions out there that seem to be of god but do not have the salvation message.

That's true. There will be lots of fake prophets or illusions that pretend to be spirit of light.

I think its people who ate too many blue mushrooms or have over-active imaginations that see these virgin marys in trees and breakfast toast.

True Marianists should be able to tell, when a demon starts telling them to do evil things in Her name, what is wrong with the picture.
