I live in one of my parents house's, but not with them as they live a 16 hour drive away.. and they probably visit once every 5 weeks for a week or so.. well while they are not here at the house I live in I tend to get quiet lonely.. they don't particulary want me to get a housemate as they still part live in the house and I respect that as thier wishe's but would like to get a doggie as I absolutley love them soo much just to keep me company, anyway how should I approach them about getting one as we sort of had a brief conversation about it about 3 months ago and they sort of blew the idea off.. We have had two family dogs in the past and have had to put them down due to illness's and my mum seems to think that she never want's to go through that pain again.. but I miss having a little mate around?? any suggestions??

Do your research FIRST. Figure out the best suited dog for you, the costs, how you will manage it, the training. Have all of that done. Find a breeder, and have it all set up.

Know your subject. Make sure you have the training, costs, vet appointments, equipment (kennels, leashes, dishes, food) all worked out.

It sounds like you are a mature (if not grown) child?

If you are an adult, I'd even say: let them know you are going to go ahead and do it, but respect thier home and be responsible for any damage a puppy will do... ie. after its housebroken, you may need to pay for carpet cleaning. Or have an old throw for any furniture they may own. Keep it clean, and healthy, and that will help control any odours.

It sounds like your mom would end up loving a little "grandpuppy" again, just make sure its your responsibility and not hers.

I just can't stress, do the research FIRST. Know what exactly you want, and how your going to do it.

"mom, dad, i want a dog, just bc you too are apart doesn't mean i have to be from what i love, give me a dog now or else."
- NO JK.
I'd say talk to them and tell them that although you guys had already talked about it in the past, you were wanting to know if they could reconsider the idea, also tell them that pets are not perfect either, there is no difference in getting a hamster, a hippo, or a parrot, if they get sick, then they get sick and we have to help, its almost like a baby, if they get sick, we can't just let them die, can we? Hopely it all works out well and soon you won't be lonely anymore, one thing dou,if youre parents seem to be really strict you might have to do some devating, give it your best and and hopely you get what you want. HOpe it helps!

Tell them you are researching various dog breeds and are considering bringing a dog into the home. Your mom has issues, and I understand that, but it will ultimately not be her dog, but yours. She only need allow you to keep it in her home.

Find out what other concerns they may have when it comes to a new dog, such as puppies with housebreaking and teething. If this is maybe a concern, tell them you will consider an adult rescue that is house broken and beyond a teething/chewing stage. Maybe knowing their home won't become damaged from a little puppy will help.

Tell them the truth about being lonely and companionship. Then add a little guilt and tell them you would like the security. If they are still reluctant ask them if you buying a hand gun would be a better alternative. This should push them over the edge and agree to a nice dog for you.

Just tell them you would like to get a dog because it will make you feel safe having one around.

Just explain to your parents that just because someone we love dies, whether it be a human, or a pet, life goes on, and we continue on to love as we all should, not just linger in grief.
