Carotid artery stenting is the process of placing stents or "openers" to the carotid arteries which run away from the heart and to either side of the neck. The carotid arteries are one of the two systems that supply the face and brain with blood and the oxygen supply.

When the carotid arteries become sclerosed because of high cholesterol or other diseases, it is necessary to do this procedure in order to insure the brain receives it's oxygen supply. Unfortunately, there are some risks of stroke and serious injury with this surgery, but they are small compared to the possible risks of not having them.

Usually if the carotid arteries are in need of this surgery, there may be possible heart damage as well in the form of cornorary artery disease. Please discuss this possibility with your doctor to make sure they only have to do one surgery rather than 2.
