She really cant walk outside now, because it is so cold out and she gets cold very quick. She has about 5-6 pounds to lose. Any ideas?

its all about the food. Its not usually how much your feeding a dog its what you feed him (please don't listen to the morons telling you otherwise I know what I'm talking about) Most name brand dog foods that you find in stores (Purina, pedigree etc.) only meet minimal health requirements believe it or not they have tons of fillers, fat, and junk in them. They aren't good for the dog at all. Shocking isn't it? Try feeding him something like wellness, which has no fillers and is better for him.........plus they actually like it more! If your feeding him just wellness, no table scraps or extra treats he will be much more healthy and fit. Its a bit more expensive but its defiantly worth it if you love your pet! look at their web-page http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/dogs/wellness_overview.html Also you should walk the dog even if it is cold out, get him a nice sweater from pet-co and walk him......even if its only for like 10 minutes

Im so confused. YOu feed him only 1 tablespoon of meat plus veggies a day? Or that is what you feed him in addition to something else? Even a 5 lb dog would eat more than that when being raw fed. This sounds like either someone is sneaking this animal food, the dog has a medical problem that needs to be dealt with at the vet, or something MAJOR is missing from your story, perhaps all three. EDIT: Then you are feeding him FAR too little. He needs to be seen by a vet. There are several metabolic disorders that can affect weight.

There are other ways to exercise your dog beside walking. You could play fetch with in indoors (I'm assuming that because it's a dachshund, that it's sort of small, and we do this with our Geman Shepherd puppy, which weighs about 70 lbs now). Or if you really want, you could get it a sweater, though that wouldn't be my first choice. Also, talk to you vet about putting the dog on a healthier diet, ie measuring how much food it eats and only giving it a certain amount of time to eat it before you take it away.

Cut back on the food.
No treats and if you give treat make is a slice of carrot or a green bean. No table food scraps. Cut down the amount of regular dog food.
She will loose weight even with out exercise if you cut down the food.
That is what my friend the breeder does for hers. She raises dachshunds. One of her dogs went to the Westminster show.

First, she can walk outside, my greyhounds do it and they are smooth-coated and have no undercoat. Get her a sweater and boots too if her feet get cold.

Try switching her food to a weight control formula - most major dog food companies have one. If you switch her food, you need to make a gradual change so she doesn't get the runs. Also, you need to drastically cut down on treats. Lots of people give their over-weight dogs vegetables for treats, maybe a bit of 1% cottage cheese a few times a week.

You can also play with her in the house more- see if you can get her to chase you, throw a ball, whatever she likes to do. Good luck!

Get a play toy and throw it an have her bring it back. if she don't find anoughther exercises for indoors. A swift brisk walk won't hurt her and she will get more used to the cold after a bit and it's healthier with some fresh air. The fresh air will make her more playfull if she is healthy

i have a dashund and i keep him thin by having another dog around because he gets very playful and keeps the weight off him maybe if you bought a little friend for your dog he may shift the pounds, or maybe cut back on how many times a day you feed him hope this helps!! =)

NO table food! And use a diet dog food that your vet prescribes and only the amount they tell you to feed her. It'll be tough but it worked on my wiener dog!
