Good question .. I personally think this Life in Prison is BS .. why should our tax dollars go to keeping some Murder or Child molester alive ?? .. they should be Killed. there is no recovery for these kinda people . We Need to start using the death penalty more.

Thankfully we use our death Penalty in Virginia , hell we even give them a choice , Lethal Injection OR the Electric Chair.

There are 2 different types of life sentences. 1. Life without Parole and 2. Life with Parole. Depending on which State it is in for the Life with Parole. A Convict can possibly Parole out after 20 years.
For Life without ??? I have no earthly idea. Kinda like why do they use the electric chair, Gas Chamber or Lethal Injection. When you could go out Buy a good piece of rope and hang several for a small amount of money. Electric bills are going through the roof. Cyanide gas can't be cheap. It takes a licensed Doctor to administer the Lethal Injection plus the drugs that the Doctor is injecting has to cost more than a good piece of rope. A convict who has been sentenced to Life without, The only reason I can possibly come up with is What if..... Later on someone else came forward and claimed responsibility for the crime and gave up crucial evidence that showed that this person actually did the crime. An innocent person was killed. That is one of the reasons that it takes so long for a Death Row Convict to be put down. Except for Texas. Do not commit a Capitol Offense in Texas. That State has an express lane for Death Row Convicts.

Are you talking about the UK? If so, capital punishment was abolished in this country some 50 years or so ago. Perhaps the question should be why do people who are convicted for life actually spend so little time in prison? Maybe the sentencing should be based more on a sliding scale according the the severity of the crime, the prospect of that person reoffending and their current age. Some murderers are only in their teens and by the time they come out, they are only in their early 30s and probably learning all kinds of new tricks whilst in prison.

Frankly I believe life imprisonment to be worse than a
death sentence. However, there have been several
executions of condemned prisoners, where the offender
was found later. One mistake does not justify an action
when involving the death sentence.

Life imprisonment and being executed are two totally different things. Ask yourself this - if you were convicted of something and had the choice of accepting a sentence of death or serving a life sentence (I mean really for the rest of your life) which would you choose?

Because life imprisonment means just that. They live out the rest of their life in prison, unless the judge said that he could get parole in however many years. Then he gets out eventually, but he'll probably still be in there a long time.
The death sentence means that he will get electrocuted, lethally injected, or the gas chamber. But only after 15 or more years of appeals and wasted tax dollars.

The UK abolished the death sentence after a lot of Public objections. This followed some "unsafe" convictions.
The death sentence can still be brought in for Treason.

Most states have choosen not to have the death sentence. With the prosecution of even a single capital case costing millions of dollars, the cost of executing 1,000 people has easily risen to billions of dollars. In light of the serious economic challenges that our country faces today, the valuable resources that are expended to carry out death sentences would be better spent investing in programs that work to prevent crime, such as improving education, providing services to those with mental illness, and putting more law enforcement officers on our streets. We should make sure that money is spent to improve life, not destroy it....

A "life" sentence does not always = your entire life.

The death sentence is not legal in all states or nations.

It is a more serious punishment and is not always appropriate.

Life imprisonment is actually cheaper in most cases due to appeals and court costs in addition to years on death row and the actual execution itself.

what country are you in.
in the uk we abolished the death penalty about 40 ~ 50 years ago.
in the 1980's and 1990's there were several high profile cases where people who had been sentanced to life imprisonment were found to be innocent and had been set up by the police.
their sentances were set aside... something which would have been more difficult if they had been sentanced to death.
