Passive speakers are driven by an external
amp or receiver (i.e. amp/tuner/preamp in
one), while powered or "active" speakers
have their own on-board amplifiers -similar
to what you would see in a powered subwoofer.

The best is relative, but I can recommend a superb
system that I would get that would make me question
spending any more on a home theater/music system.

- Sony Bravia XBR 46" LCD HDTV

- Arcam FMJ AV9 Preamp/Processor
- Arcam FMJ P7 Power Amplifier x 7 channels
- Arcam FMJ DV29 DVD/CD player

- Silverline Audio Center Stage center channel
- Silverline Audio SR15 main channels
- Silverline Audio SR15 side-effect channels
- Silverline Audio SR15 rear channels

- Hsu Research VTF-3 Mk 2 powered subwoofer x 2

- DH Labs Silver Sonic cabling

- Dayton Audio heavy mass speaker stands x 6

I cannot see myself spending any more on a home
theater system that would give so very little if any
improvement over this complete system for music
and home theater. I'm not even all that convinced
on the 7.1 surround sound (or even 6.1 surround),
and perhaps would just go with the 5.1 surround
sound with the dual powered subwoofers.

Sony as the BEST HT system?? And me spending all this money on dedicated amplifiers and processors, I could have just bought a Sony Box system!

First what is your budget? I can name several systems that could be considered the best or ultimate HT systems, but you would have to be making a seven figure salary. Post more details as to what you are looking for and how it will be used.

Your question is too vague, it is similiar to me asking what the best automobile is. Way to broad of a question to get any good insight.

I think you can go for Mirage OmniSat 6, Whaferdale or Athena Technoligies Micra. It all depends upon your room specifications and your budget.Else you can pick a copy of Best of Audio by Stereo Review or What HiFi from a book store.

hmmm...

if you want the best, IMHO it is from companies such as Wilson Aucio (speakers) and Krell (electronics) for an "entry level" system from these companies, you are looking at a minimum of $30,000 on up to over half a million
