I share this small office with him alone and he dictates his letters crouched on the floor in a corner behind me. I temp in the same hospital a lot and this is the first time I've worked for him. I work for someone else now (I float around the hospital as a secretary) and how he's asked me to work for him again, but under that situation, I'm reluctant.

He has his own way of doing things. Doesn't mean he isnt mentally stable, just eccentric. Alot of brilliant people have odd way's of doing things.

i dont think it necessarily means he is mentally unstable. maybe he is just a bit eccentric, maybe this is how he acheives mental clarity, by being behind you and crouching, and maybe he finds it hard to dictate if you can see him. it does sound a bit strange but remember all people are different and unless you feel he is a real threat you should give him the benefit. on the flip side you have the right to feel comfortable and safe at work so if you feel you cant go on talk to someone at the hospital about it.

Many reasons why you should keep away from him but one will suffice:
NO NORMAL INDIVIDUAL WOULD DO THAT. Everyone knows that and he knows that too and if he continues doing it... there is a risk he will start getting ....hmmmmm...... a little too uncomfortably familiar with you. The guy is a nutter and so REFUSE to work for him. Tell the hospital straight.... "I do not feel conmfortable working for a guy who does that !" They will not force you to work for him... BUT THEY MUST KNOW YOUR REASONS. They will respect your wish of confidentiality. Some people here have called him eccentric... but I would not like to be prescribed medicine or treatment by an... eccentric. Only millionaires are eccentric. that guy is NUTS ! Run, girl,... RUN !!! As John Lennon used to sing, "You'd better run for your life if you can, little girl, catch you with another (mad doctor) it's the end... little girl !!!" --- And... what if other staff in the hospital already know about that guy being like that ? What are people going to say about you being willing to work for him ?! Listen to John Lennon !!!

I think the doctor needs a doctor. Why on earth does he sit crouched on the floor? I think you should tell someone about him or even talk to him in private to ask if hes ok. He seems to be suffering from some kind of mental condition, or maybe stress.

I know from experience that dictation doesn’t come naturally and maybe he has a problem with this, maybe he is embarrassed talking in front of you or maybe he has sciatica.

I suspect that if he fails to have a reputation for unprovoked attacks then you’re quite safe.

If he's a medical genius you can say that he's just eccentric.

If he's not, then he's a bit strange, but if that's the only wierd habit he has I wouldn't worry too much about him being mentally unstable. Rather unusual......

Why do you think he is mentally unstable? Has he shown any signs of mental illness? I think a mentally-unstable doctor wouldn't last long in medicine.

He sounds somewhat eccentric to me, but I don't honestly see why this should make you reluctant to work for him.

Why not ask him why he does it?

I wouldn't consider him mentally unstable for the way he dictates his letters - he just has his own unique way of doing things and there's nothing wrong with that

Ask him why he does it and politely say..."I find it a tad disturbing, could you sit on a chair?"

Hmmm maybe joke about and say it makes you think of him as being mad and thats not good for a doctors rep.

Hey poopsy, it does sound kind of strange, but if this is the only thing that he does that seems weird to you there is probably a reason. Why not ask him nicely..."out of curiosity, why do you dictate that way?" good luck :)
