I am in the middle class and I just got back from Iraq. The argument that only the poor go into the military is just false. The argument that we are not meeting recruiting goals is crazy. We were only a small number short and that was more than made up for by stop-loss. We are now meeting the goals. The bottom-line is that draft talk was about politics. The Democratic Party brought up the bill and then tried to scare young people that not voting Democrat would get them drafted. The military does not want it and we do not need it. The social aspects and the benefits of mandatory service is another issue.
Also, S.89 and H.R.163 are the bills that (if you want the truth) you can review. These bills were brought up by the Democratic leadership as part of anti-war agenda. The Republicans soundly defeated them. As usual, the Democrats try to use fear. Like Social Security will be cut etc.etc.etc. Same playbook they always use.

1. Because the Idea of a draft makes people think the war is going bad and a military failure in Iraq is a victory for democrats.
2. Deep down democrats are the party of big government and taking choices away from the individual. (like the choice to join the military or not)
2. a. the draft fulfills the need of socialists to "feel good" about everyone helping out the government with "national service"
3. Some think that the military is disproportionately poor and minority, truth is it is disproportionately White and Midwestern. (except for the USMC they are disproportionately Hispanic, I don't know why that is but that's what the numbers show)

I disagree that someone said it is racism.
The Liberals just want a fair portion of American youth to serve the country, instead of leaving all the risk to the poor (who just happen to be represented more by minorities and wouldn't have a rich uncle to get them out of the firing line).
If there was a greater chance that relatives of congressmen were to be sent, it would make their decisions much more considered as to the validity of the military action.
They would be less inclined to wipe a couple of thousand soldiers off the 'Risk' board because it would affect them also.
The draft should be for something short, like 6 months. This would instill enough discipline and knowledge but not create a situation where 2 of the best years of a person's life are taken from them.

The actual reason behind promoting draft ideas is anti-war.
We believe that if the system were balanced, (that people from all walks of life would be active in our armed forces, not just the poor) there would be a bigger anti-war voice.
If a draft were inacted, children from affluent households would be treated the same as children from the projects.
The affluent parents would start to voice their concerns about the negative effects of the war (like the poor parents already do), and perhaps bring about change (since nobody really wants to send their son or daughter off to be killed).

As usual, a conservative missed the point. The poster of that question wasn't specifically advocating a draft, just that politicians would be more hesitant to start wars if they knew that their sons and daughters would be on the front lines.
The vast majority of liberals are opposed to "Selective Service", which, when you get old enough, you will need to sign up for.

Because we don't have enough people lining up at the recruiting stations to sign up for the military anymore. And the more countries that we decide to invade the smaller our armies are to fight in these battles and the less chance of a win.

I am the most liberal person I know and I am definitely against a draft. This is actually the first I have ever heard about the draft without someone saying that Bush wants it. What liberal said they wanted a draft? Please email me and let me know at lovetazzy83@yahoo.com. Because that liberal will definitely not get my vote.

No it is just racism. Look at who is sponsoring the bill. They have stated before that they want "white boys to die alongside" the other races. It is ridiculous. Also, this is the bill that John Kerry cited during the election, saying that Bush was behind it! What a load of crap. Do these people have any morals?

Frankly I think all people should be required to spend two years in the Military after they finish school. Just like Israel and Switzerland. Would help them grow up and mature.
PS- I'm also an Independent voter so don't be flinging the Neocon crap at me either.
