Do the same as overweight people, less food and more exercise. People waste money on 'special' diet food when just less regular food and exercise works better and is more cost effective.

Someone mentioned one cup of dog food, not enough for a lab. I have golden retrievers that eat four cups and are far from overweight, but they are very active.

Try a web search for 'homemade dog food'. If you have the time once a week to boil up some chicken parts, burger meat, rice, once a week you are set! You can add pet vitamins on vet instruction, and make daily servings for the fridge and freezer.
Wise shopping will even save you money over canned food, and dry food isn't the best anyway. There are some veggies that dogs will like too, experiment first. Cooked carrots are a fave of Shelties, for some reason....

I have done this for fat cats, and along with excersize they trim down quick! Plus animals love the food, and you can eat it yourself when relatives come to visit!
(Make sure you clean out any bones from boiled chicken!)

Always remember that pets are members of the family and are loved as such. Would you feed your mother-in-law crunchy lumps of strange flavored grain and grease product? Think again, sonny!!

You can buy lite dog food if it makes you happy.
However the best and easiest way to get a dog to loose weight is simple.
Read your dog food bag and see what the recommended amount of food is for the size of your dog.
Feed the lowest amount or slightly less.
Stop giving treats and no people food. Feed only the dog food and if you are giving treats make them slices of carrot.
Cut down of what you feed and get strict. No other treats just dog food.
The dog will drop the weight.
I took 20 pounds off a dog by cutting down on the food alone. He idid not increase his exerscie much as he is blind so he sits around alot. By just cutting out treats and feeding only one cup of food he dropped the 20 pounds and looks great.

There are certain weight control foods you can buy probably at your vet or local pet store. The type of food a dog eats isnt usually the case for weight gain. Exercise is key especially with such a breed they needs lots of it and everyday

You can subistitute green beans for part of his usual food to cut calories without leaving him STARVING.

PS hypothyroid is fairly common in Labs and typically make them gain weight easly so getting that checked may not be a bad idea.

You did not mention age. How big a dog (Labs vary greatly) Nor what or how much you are feeding. Firstly, you may likely be simply overfeeding..and underexercising. More info would help.

Cut out the treats and especially any goodies from the table. Gradually switch over to a low cal dog food. Most important - take him out for more exercise. Pat pat, good dog :)

you can get dog food made especially for overweight dogs.
Also lots of excersise! Labs have a tendancy for becoming overweight if not very active, especially if spayed or neutered.
