What material that you have studied has given you the most profound rational for disbelieving theism?

TTC, I am a Christian but I wanted to hear from atheists why they do not believe. I think it is fascinating that so many people in the world have such vast and sometimes volitile ideas about God and the lack thereof. In all fairness I try to look at everyone on a humanist level rather than religious level when it comes to friendships and such. Religion does not have to determine who is a good person or not. In fact, in the scheme of things it means nothing until judgment day and since I am not God I choose not to play God...even on TV...

I know this question was for atheist but I couldn't resist looking to see what was written. I was surprised to see the difference in believers and non believers response on this forum. Like this question so often a side is chosen by something they have learned from books or enviorment. Unlike myself, which I would never take the word of a book or things around me for such a serious decision. After all many of these books are written with the view of the author or researched with the slant of knowledge leading in the direction of its intent. To truthly know or take a stand on is God real.... or is God not.........you have to go to the source itself to know your OWN mind on the matter. Just an opinion and no disrespect towards anyone

Unlike some Atheists I know that mention books like the origin of the species, the end of faith, or the bible, the material that has given me the most profound rational for disbelieving is understanding and applying academic logic (usually found under philosophy departments).

Not exactly material, just observation.

I've observed that I have lived my life and others have lived their lives without any divine influence at all and that I've gotten where I am today mostly on my own or with the help of other people.

I haven't seen any special treatment for anyone who does believe in God or Jesus or Allah except from others who share the same beliefs. The evil go unpunished except by man, the weak aren't protected except by man, the righteous aren't rewarded, except by man. There is no divine anything.

All conclusive evidence points to the fact that there is no God.

I take things as i see them, i can't see your god or anyone elses god nor can i see any physical evidence that a god exists or has ever existed. Why should I take the words of men who lived thousands of years ago who dreamed up wild stories that contradict themselves and are so elaborate i.e riding a horse given to him by an angel to heaven ??? WTF, finding golden slabs with words on it which suddenly disappear YEAH RIGHT
I suppose the Easter bunny is real as well is it and Santa with his flying sleigh. Read the religious books and see how absurd they are, full of hate anger and control.

I don't think you necessarily have to be studying something to disbelieve. Some disbelieve just because we were grown into a religion, i.e. no one made me go to church, no one told me to believe in certain things so ... no body showed me religions.

Various different books on Darwin, dinosaurs and evolution. And The Bible.

Darwin, Engels. The Bible itself. There is no one book that will lead you to atheism. It is rational thinking.

I didn't study anything. I simply thought about it and came to my own conclusions.

It didn't occur to me to read anything. For one thing because I wasn't planning on becoming anything; I didn't have atheism as a goal.
