One morning, somewhere during the middle ages, a military captain sat in his tent pouring over maps when a young man enters. The captain looks up and recognizes the young man as the sentry from the night before.
"Yes. What have you for me?", asks the captain.
The sentry goes on to explain how he had had a dream the previous night that barbarians would attack the encampment from the north.
The captain, not being a superstitious man considered it and decided to increase the number of men on watch for the upcoming night anyway because one can never be too careful.

That night, barbarians came from the north to attack the soldiers, and because of the increased watch, the attack was foiled.

The next day a party was held to celebrate the victory and everyone was there except for the sentry who had warned the captain. He was not there because the captain had put him in jail. Why?

In the middle ages they were very wary of anything that could be explained as a form of witch craft. The captain thought that the sentry was a witch so he put him in jail. The thought in the middle ages was that any form of witchcraft would bring evil. Because they were in a battle, their evil were the barbarians. The sentry in jail was thought of cursing them in a way of having the barbarians come.

Well it could be that if the barbarians took the opportunity to attack whilst everyone was having a party then it would be wise to have the gifted sentry safe from the battle in jail.

because he did want people to know that won because of the sentry, he wanted people to think that he was a good captain and that he was always ready for attacks.

That's an easy one: he was arrested for sleeping while on duty! Otherwise he couldn't have had a dream while on watch...
