I believe that you can cry underwater. Read on my defense explanations of its correlations based on the few facts:

Fact #1The secretory cells of the lacrimal gland produce a highly complex product of water, ions and proteins. At least five neurotransmitter receptors and three different second message systems are involved in controlling the different secretory processes of this highly sophisticated secretory epithelium. The secretion is controlled by sympathetic or parasympathetic innervation.

Correlation: As there is stimulant to cause crying then there is innervation to make the secretions of tears.

Fact#2:Tears are produced by the lacrimal and accessory lacrimal glands. The lacrimal glands are located in the upper/outer quadrant of the orbit and produce "reflex" tears when the eye is irritated or stimulated by emotions.

Correlation: Aside from emotional stimulation that make you cry, water that gets in contact with your eyes is irritant that will increase even more tears.

Fact #3:Secretion of water by the acinar cells is by osmosis and is driven by the outward movement of ions, particularly Cl–. Neurotransmitter receptors are linked via second messenger systems to ion channels and regulate their permeability and thus the movement of water.
Correlation: The lacrimal ducts are controlled with sphincters thus hydrostatic pressure won't have an impact on the inside movement of the water.

Fact #4.The drainage of tears is both passive and active. Gravity is responsible for passive drainage. Blinking facilitates active drainage by causing negative pressure in the canaliculus and lacrimal sac; the negative pressure draws tears into the lacrimal drainage system.

Correlation: I believe that hydrostatic pressure will result to a negative pressure inside thus drawing the tears into the lacrimal drainage system which will be out as tears.

Well, with such few correlations I truly believe that you can cry underwater though it won't be obvious as tears mixed up in water won't make the difference on how the water looks not unless chemically tested.

You may want to give it a try and you will believe me. How I know? It was my way to conceal my tears ifever I was crying back in my younger years especially when I was scolded by my mother. With all the water, I still could tell if I was still making tears or not.

"Have a nice day!"♥

Yes I think you can cry as you can still feel emotion but the tears would be swallowed up by the surrounding water. I don't think you should try though because one part of crying is erratic breathing and you can't breathe under water.

Why would you be crying under water? I see no reason for ever having to have to cry under water.

Yes the glands for secreting aqueous humour a.k.a tears are found near the back of the eyeball and can release tears into the eye socket which will then go into the water outside.

If you are in a chlorine pool with no goggles on your eyes are constanly crying to wash the chlorine out of you eyes.

When we're depressed we either go into water to relax or to kill ourselves drowning. If we go in to relax we will not cry because we'll try our best not to remember what depresses us. If we go in to kill ourselves then we have our mind set on doing something and there's no room for crying.
Bottom line is: I don't think anybody every tried crying in the water.

Yes - of course... but I think it would be dangerous to watch sad movies under water

Someone's been watching the 'be a teacher' advert! I'm sure we can, you just wouldn't be able to discern the tears in the water.

Yeah, but it's difficult to cry without doing that weird hyperventilating shudder, that makes you snort like a pig... So watch you don't drown!
