There is this girl I like and we are friends. I really like her but don't have the guts to ask her for the fear of her saying no and it being a little too awkward. We have gone out as friends with each other and have joked around with each other. I wanted to know if there are any signs or things I can look for to find out if she does.

Well, sometimes she'll hit me or criticize me. Like, if we're in a group, nobody will respond to what I said except her. She'll laugh and make fun of me or what I said.

First of all, dont ever fear rejection. Its not so bad. And after a while you gain the kind of confidance that means, you wont be rejected. Women are attracted to confidance, across the board without fail.
If you like her, ask her out. Tell her you like her, dont waste time second guessing, or being afraid. Ask her out.
Women respond well to confidance. Even if she says no, she doesnt want to ruin your friendship, you tell her you would rather lose a friendship than never have a chance to see if you would work.
Youre a man, buck up, dont fear the word no, its not scary.Its not a big deal.

there is only one sure way to know , you must push all your fears to the side and just ask her . yes it may be awkward but it is the only sure fire true way to know. and from the sound of your question i'd say you've got a 70/30 shot that she will say yes (the 70 being for or in your favor), if you don't ask and try you will never know and it will bug you for the remainder of your years.or if too shy send a letter (snail mail), e-mail, a note , some flowers and a note, but be sure you really like her in that way, and do not confuse love with lust or friendship. any way it will all work out , just ask and you will know ! so what are you waiting for , do it NOW!

From what you've written, it sounds like she likes you. It also sounds like you're pretty inexperienced in dating women.
I would recommend that you ask her out, but don't tell her where; say "it's something special / it's a surprise."
If you plan to go for a meal, find out what food she likes first.
If you wanna go to the movies, find out what films she likes first.
The trick is not to be too obvious, but also to let her realise that you've put a lot of consideration into choosing a venue that she would like. Don't be over-the-top about anything; just be cool.

Body language and eye contact. Does she touch you as often as she can or do you catch her looking at you. Does she ever pay you compliments on the way you look or nice shoes...anything like that?

if she lykes to link arms or give you lotsa hugs that maybe be a sign,
also is she lyke joking will hit you, or sometymes lykes to argue then that can be a big affection factor.
maybe you should just try hinting at it. If she lykes you and gets the hint then she might be alittle more open with it,

so what if she say no, that's not the worst thing that can happen to you, plus its not awkward to ask her straight forward, rather than not asking at all...if you don't ask you will never know whether she like you or not! just like they say better to try and fail than not to try at all.
