Had a problem with my sons old PC, running windows ME. The system.ini file is corrupt.
Mouse doesnt work, except in safe mode. I cannot change the display settings and the latest development is that it will not boot into normal mode at all, only safe mode.
I have been told the only thing that I can do is to re-install windows me, but it came without any OS disc or recovery disc.
so, do I really need to re-install or does anyone have any other useful suggestions
The PC has quite a lot of student work on it, as well as genealogical data.
also, where do you get windows discs from. I am only looking for 98/ME/2000 - and i cant find them for sale anywhere

I can get into safe mode and think I can back up the work.
I dont want to put XP onto it, as it is only used for a few games some student 'word' docs and a general internet browser.
If someone has an ME disc and licence number, I would be happy to pay a reasonable amount.

If its only the system.ini file , and you can still get on to the machine via safe mode, you can find copies of what the system.ini file should say and edit it. If that doesn't help then maybe a re-install is the way to go, but without a disc you will not be able to do so. When you get a disc you may be able to do a repair rather than a complete re-install and replace all the system files allowing the machine to work properly again. the best place to look for a new disc with a LISCENCE would be on ebay

It sounds as if the computer does need a total system restore (ie windows putting back on) I suggest you back up all files that you can onto a disc, if you cant then unfortunatley the works dommed! Windows discs arent cheap there around £180 (mine was for xp i dont know about the early versions) If you can find a nice person in the paper who offers to fix computers he will put a compy on for you at a fraction of the price but the windows discs are available at PC world and Staples.

Yes you will need the cd to reinstall win me.
did you buy the pc from new the operating system may be installed on a seperate drive ie D drive or even E drive.
YOU NEED TO BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM otherwise you will lose you work .
boot to safe mode and do a backup of all the files you need on cd.
once thats done you have two options if you have not got the operating system on the pc or no disc.
buy win xp home or borrow it and install as a clean boot straight from the cd. cheapest way to get xp is the free ads usually people have changed their operating system and sell the disks with the key number .

What form of laptop? it would desire to have a 2d trickychronic that has that techniques on it and could be accessed by ability of clicking some thing like F2 in the previous the abode windows emblem exhibits up. you additionally can touch the corporate that made it and ask for a grasp restoration disk to be shipped to you. frequently doesnt fee any funds. EDIT: no longer all desktops contain the reintall disk anymore so purely cuz you dont have one doesnt recommend its the shops fault.

try e-bay, PC world, shops on tottnham court road, shop around first, or google it, try also computer shopers, keliko.com (i think it is the right spelling!!), in the other hand you can go to a computer fain every sat morning, it is right under the BT tower in london, you pay i think £2.50 to get in, but you can what ever you are looking for, as well as the fain, on sun morning in new covengarden market, not coven garden in central london, no, this one is near vauxhaul tube station, it is a market where you find waht ever you want, from cars to fridges, to clothes, hand/power tools, dvd`s and computers, it is worth a shot
good luck

I think the best option for you is to try and find the file on the web and download it. You could also try a friend or colleague that has the same OS as you.

Take a look on www.ebay.co.uk you will find cheap stuff there, also you can take it to a computer repair shop.
I would suggest if you have a CD writer to copy the work from pc to CD`s.
