Citizens of the US (and around 30 other countries) do not need a 'visa' per se. What you need is an Electronic Travel Authority. You apply for it on-line by following the links on the Dept of Immigration website below. It just takes a few minutes to do from the comfort of your home/office and costs A$20.
The ETA is then registered on the immigration system and is matched to your passport on your entry, A Visitor ETA is valid for visits to Australia for tourism or to visit friends or relatives. It is valid for multiple visits within 12 months from date of issue and the maximum length of each visit is three months. You must not work while in Australia.

When you go to any country you need a visa. For some countries, it is harder to apply for the visa. However because Australia and America have a close relationship, its pretty easy to get one.
I always thought that you are given an application when your on the plane... when i went to thailand that's what happened.
Don't listen to the crazy guy who was talking about a mastercard, he obviously has no idea what your talking about... lol

The bes thing to do is check with the official website:
http://www.immi.gov.au
or contact the nearest embassy.
Immigration rules can change without notice and everyone thinks they are an expert non immigration. I have been caught out
by the rules changing and even the travel agent mis informing me.
Travel at your own peril if you don't want the correct answer!

Go to the Australian government web site. You need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) that costs $20 but you can do it all online. Its good for 12 months after you get it.

Yes. If you are booking with an airline that's a partner of Qantas (Continental, for example) they will get it for you when you book your flight for $10 which is the cost of the visa. It's electronic so you don't get your passport stamped in arvance. It's good for 3 months.

That person is right. It is called an ETA. If you book your flights through an agent most of them will do that for you at no charge.
If you don't have one you will be on the next plane home.
