im in ohio. i have read that huskies like cold weather, but wouldnt that mean that they would have been born or grow up in it??
would like to know in ohio weather, the rain and snow how do other dog owners exercise their dogs during this time? I have a big basement for my puppy right now, but dont know what exercise i could give her in the cold winter months? i take her on an hour walk in nice weather, but what about bad weather?

Huskies are cold weather dogs and it won't matter that your pup wasn't born in it either. My American Eskimo was born here in Michigan, but she sure does like the snow and I will see her laying down in it on a really cold, but not heavy snow, kind of day. She tolerates summers well, but definitely prefers the winter.
You pup will be able to handle walks in the cold weather, so it's you who will have to catch up and bundle up for the occasion.
In your big basement, it sounds like you might have room for a good game of fetch and retrieve on those really nasty days when going out is bad. Gotta keep them active, cuz a husky will get bored otherwise.
Parvo is a really nasty illness your puppy can get if you aren't really careful. Many don't survive this either, but I did have a pup who got thru it okay. You need to make sure puppy gets all of her shots and boosters and even then, you still need to be careful. My pup was 7 months old when she got parvo, even tho I had her up to date. Vaccinations help, but are not 100%.
You can walk your pup at this age, but you need to keep her clear of dogs you don't know (that could be infected). My puppy became very lethargic and had bowel movement changes that tipped me off something was wrong and so the vet was able to put her on fluids and antibiotics and managed to save her. My puppy actually had contracted it by eating the poo of an infected dog who had done business in our yard (I know, it's gross, but some eat it).
Good luck with the new puppy!

You should go buy a book about huskies and read up or do an internet search. They don't have to be raised in cold weather to be able to tolerate it. They have VERY thick coats and can overheat if kept inside without water available. It doesn't matter if the weather is bad out, you still take your dog out. I don't know where in Ohio you are but I'm in the Cleveland area and there are tons of dog parks here. I take my dog down rain or shine summer or winter. She goes down at least 4 times a week, usually every day. Granted us humans have to bundle up in the winter time and it does get really cold just standing there, but the dogs need the exercise and with a breed like a husky a walk once a day isn't going to suffice. They have a LOT of stamina. If you have a treadmill you may consider teaching the dog to run/walk on that to burn off some of the energy, but preferably you'd take it to the park so it can play with other dogs. Huskies love to run in the snow and roll around in it, it's about the only time of year where they are comfortable and not overly hot. Try finding some dog parks in your area, or you can take it out to some of the state parks and letting it run (long lead). Remember that you cannot trust a husky to run off leash and come back, they can outdistance you very quickly and tend to have a high prey drive, so when your dog isn't fenced in, make sure to have it on a leash.

The husky's fur coat makes it tolerant to extreme temperatures. Even if it doesnt grow up in Alaska, it will still have that double layered thick coat of fur. Don't worry, your dog won't be cold in ohio. And huskies are a very high energy breed...they are sled dogs at heart and need a lot of exercise even if it's cold or raining! Your basement will be like a little prison for your full grown husky.
It's none of my business but these are questions you should ask yourself before getting the puppy...another thing, a 5 week old puppy should NOT be going on one hour walks. He's way too small and he is going to have joint and bone problems if you don't stop that right away. He's also way too young to be away from his mother. Puppies shouldn't be taken away from the little before they are *at least* 6 weeks old, somewhere between 6-10 weeks is best.
Please read some puppy care and husky breed books

Just let the puppy play in the house. At five weeks you should not be walking it anywhere.
They do not have to be born in Alaska to like the cold and snow. It is an inbred trait in this breed of dog.
Just like they love to run. They are escape artists they will go over under or thru almost anything to get loose so they can run.
A walk each day is not going to come anywhere close to satisfing the exerscie needs of this dog.
You would have to run miles and miles with her to do that.
Since at five weeks she should not even be away from the mom yet you need to keep her in the house and let her play doing what ever she likes.
It will be quite some time before you start walking on lead.
They need to be 12 weeks or more before you start taking them out where other dogs have been as they are not fully protected from the puppy shots until then.

A five week old pup is like a 12 month old kid, She needs her mom and litter mates and doesn't need to go for a walk. If you must show her off, then pick her up and carry her on your walk. Make sure you protect her from the cold.

5 week old puppies should not be walked, they should still be with their mommies. In fact, if you bought it, in many states it is illegal to sell a puppy under 6 weeks. Also, puppies do much better if left with their families for 12 weeks to learn bite inhibition and other good life lessons.
