Debra, i think you have a gift at explaining yourself in a way that is clear and concise. But i take exception to one line :
What kind of love gives it's life without thought?
The Garden. The Sweat. The Blood. Our Lord was in turmoil over this thought....
Please keep writing.

Well, I'm an Episcopalian so I know there are some people that don't consider me a Christian, but I'm going to respond. The thought is very nice, but it does have some cliches in it. In fact it reminds me of either a hymn or some reading I heard years ago. It's really hard to be completely original with this topic. But keep trying.

What is love!
It was like whispers in the wind, that touched reached right into the soul.
It was the beauty of fresh picked flowers, being displayed in a bowl.
It is the gentle touch of a lover’s tenderness, when its allowed to grow.
It’s the dance that all lover’s make, when sharing in that flow.
It’s the innocence found , between a new born child and its mother.
It’s the thing that changes with every step, for it will never smother.
But it is with you and carries you, always in its protective coat.
It’s the thing that keeps you going, when your sinking in a boat.
It’s the gift we see in nature, when we finally begin to understand.
It’s the most priceless treasure, that no value can be found.
For its nothing made from made material it does not make it own sound.
It’s a treasure that is what we make of it, its value means nothing to some.
To others it is something they try hard to keep from being undone.
It name has been used and abused, seems to lost its value in mankind’s cries.
Its as different to each person, for we all see it with different eye’s.
It was the very first thing created by a god that so many falsely claim to know.
It’s as pure as the fresh rain, and as crystal clear as fresh white snow.
Its never cold or unthoughtfulness, its light seemed to always shine so bright.
It’s has the power to warm you, in the coldest darkest time of night.
Its something that is never earned but given freely most of all.
All of the world has experienced the power the strength of its call.
To some it has no value, is thrown away, in the emptiness of the bliss.
For they do not have the understanding to see the beauty of it’s kiss.
It can be as rich as deep, as the length of that great river we know.
Or it can be swift and fast, bloom quicker then flowers you grow.
But it has to be worked and used daily, it must have it’s part in our life.
It is that bond of union related to couples who become man and wife.
It was the first creation, the cause of all we know. From the above
Its is the trash of some, the treasure of others, that gift called love.
your poem is very true,
dagonblue

Debra, that was beautiful.
I just have to say to the people who always complain about us Christians, it never ceases to amaze me how you go on and on with all your silly talk about, why we love Jesus, how we hide behind our bibles, how insecure we are, how religion - it's not a religion - it's a RELATIONSHIP, sucks us in, blah, blah, blah. Don't you get tired. You don't know us from Adam and if you hate it so much, why post such long, dragged out posts? You must be getting convicted :)

I find it disdainful of "earthly" pleasures such as love, marriage, children, etc.
I know it's not meant to be that, but that's how it strikes me. Like, "Gosh, I really love my wife and kids, but I'd throw them by the wayside if god asked me to."
As a mortal, I find that abhorrent!
To be fair, I think I'd feel the same way back in the day when I wasn't an atheist.

I think it is beautiful. And why limit it to christians? I am an Asatruar. Our AllFather sacrificed himself. The Einherjer, the Gods and Goddess and the heroes will all sacrifice themselves during Ragnarok. I appreciate the love I am given by my dieties! While I don't always feel I am worthy of this level of love, I do appreciate it, in all of it's forms.

I'm not Christian BUT it is a beautiful poem. It's quite obvious it is referring to Jesus dying for the sins. To me, the first three lines, he/she is saying that really no worldly love could compare or change the great love that Jesus showed.

For me, a muslim, it is a beautiful poem in the Love of Allah and it is touching. I only, as you know, have to disagree with two lines:
What kind of love gives it's life without thought?
With His own blood my life has been bought.
Thank you.

like this poem and this is why we should try our best in our weak human way to emulate the love THE DEITY have shown us. all we can ever hope to do is care for those we love as best we can. thanks for sharing your thoughts through this poem.
