At the end of the day cats are cats and people are people and neither think like eachother. What is an inapproriate place to you could be an ideal marking (I mean scent rubbing not soiling) spot for a cat.
Also I don't think the vinegar idea would work, it would only make the place smell like a chippy and scare the living daylights out of your cat. Also why do you want to restrict a cats natural curiousity?

I understand that pepper works. I have recently tried something called Cat Scat from garden centres which is like little pellets that let off a smell which is quite nice for humans but horrible for cats. It is not harmful to them but I wouldn't recommend using it if little kids are likely to come into the garden.
I used to have daily problems with just about every cat in the universe papping in my front garden under some bushes but Cat Scat and some well-placed mesh solved the problem in a day.

Grate some orange peel finely and place over areas that he is doing it or areas that u dont want him to do it......guess that could mean all your total floor space....lol Seriously tho, never heard of vinegar. My cat used to do it when we first moved, its marking his territory, the orange peel did the trick. Good luck.

Do you mean certain areas in your house or outside??
If it's in your house why don't you keep them to one room & shut the door!! I do this with our kittens when we go out , but we also let them out when we return.
If your talking about in the garden etc.....If you have the space you can build a larger run yourself. You can buy a very good manual on www.just4cats.com which gives detailed instructions about what you need and how to do it, and you can e-mail them for advice if you need it.

Olbas oil on a cotton wool pad works as cats can't abide the smell.
