I have been using a Powershot S2 IS and overtime have learned quite a bit about taking photos through using the M mode extensively. As a result, I have become very interested in purchasing a canon DSLR; however, I am still very unfamiliar with the selection of lenses available. Because I'm so accustomed to the 12 X zoom and macro capabilities of the S2 IS, what lens could you recommend that would provide similar, if not better, actions?

Canon has a 28-200mm zoom. With a digital Rebel you have to take a 1.6 crop factor into consideration, so that works out to an effective range of 45-320mm.
I'd personally rather use a Sigma or Tamron 18-200mm lens. With these, even with the crop factor, you still have wide-angle coverage.
And I'd still rather forget about an all-in-one lens and get something with a limited zoom range but much better image quality. Such as the Canon 17-85mm zoom (and a seperate 70-200mm lens).
