Bostonian, again you are a voice of reason. While some of these people touched on some possibilities, I dare say that none of them know what they are talking about. There are two reasons that a car stalls in deep water. First, the electrical system shorts out, second, if the electrical system somehow miraclously survived, water would enter the engine through things like the air intake, and because water won't burn, the engine dies.

Way to go "Bostonian"....
I would say that the first problem would be the electrical system getting wet, and shorting out....no power-no spark-no combustion=dead engine. A second, although remote possibility would be water getting sucked up in the intake....To reach that point, the water would be so high that the electrical system would have already been fried.

Wow! We have an awful lot of folks who are clueless here!
Water getting into the electrical system, or being sucked into the engine intake will cause the engine to stall.
Water in the exhaust will NOT harm the engine by itself. Water is not "sucked" into the exhaust!! As long as the engine is running, no water will enter the exhaust.

When you drive your car over a very deep flooded road, the
chances that your engine will stop functioning is very high,
because the water is sucked into the exhaust pipe and it gets
into the engine which it cannot be combustible.
Thus, it fails to move the car.

Water causes a lack of combustion and friction. Both are needed for the spark plugs and engine.

the water enters the intake and is sucked intot the engine and water isn't combustable. so it stalls.
