Southwest Airlines runs a lot of specials, especially if you're not planning this last minute. Check them out. If not them, then next I'd check Air Tran. But I love Southwest and have always gotten good deals with them.

First I'd try Southwest Airlines
http://www.southwest.com/cgi-bin/buildItinerary2
Then just to compare prices, go to the individual airline homepages and check. Try American & Continental as well, sometimes they have good online specials. Not sure what else is out that way that would be cheap.

Cheap does not go by airline it goes by availability of seats and how early you book.

yeah it really depends on when your going, and how early you book. I prefer Jet blue but I don't believe they fly from LAX. try expedia.com, or travel.com. Hope that helps.
