Modern day wars are about freedom. Some people want ALL men to be free and some people want men to be a slave to other men or religions or what ever. So I think that in the end you have to ask " did the the people win their freedom or did they lose is"

This depends on the severity of the weapons, techniques and methods employed, it is also related to acceptance of the invaders to the local population, if it is good then surely there is winner and a looser.
