A friend of mine lives on a dirt road and it is nice and smooth right after it is plowed, but after a few days it starts getting these ridges and bumps like small waves that make it impossible to go very fast on, especially in my old car. Why does the dirt road get like this?

It gets these ridges because the soil under the road is not uniformly compacted. The weight of cars passing over the surface cause variable compaction of the soil and the effects of rain water flowing over the surface increase the effect, and add washout of parts of the material to the mix. When he scrapes the drive, he removes the ridges but doesn't address the compaction issues.

It is basicly the high frequency of the car bouncing up and down. If it was perfectly smooth then the washboard wouldn't occur. But the small imperfections cause the car to bounce and the bouncing compacts the gravel in one spot and loose the next, ect.

It is usually worse near points of braking and accelerating and will be least on a flat level stretch where people typically stay at a constant speed.

The more you grade a gravel road, the more material is pushed out to the shoulder of the road. After a couple runs with a grader, whoever owns the road will have to add more gravel. Surface treatment (ie. limestone and tar) will add to the longevity of the road, beyond the gravel road stage (5-7 years). Nothing they can do will last as long as pavement.

Friendship, no it is not undesirable....my contacts basically this week helped me turn my head removed from the darkness and in the direction of the sunshine....it is not delusional in any respect, yet a certainty.
