Helicopter blades aren't fixed like wings on an aircraft and they can flex a long way without any warning. When they are producing lift and the helicopter is about to takeoff they bend upwards, when it is idling on the ground they can be moving up and down significantly, and a gust of wind can make them move a few inches, even up to a foot.
So yes part of it is a natural reaction from people, and it is a healthy one, and secondly those blades don't always stay in exactly the same position, and a head is pretty easy chopping.
At least it is a quick way to go.

I hate helicopters everytime I get in one I am either being shot at or medic evac. There are several cases where models and stars have lost several fingers when they thrown up their hands to wave and a blade cuts them off. Looks are deceiving the blades bend down the further it goes toward the tip. If the craft is in a hole or slope that affects the angle and extent they bend toward the ground. God Bless You and the Southern People.

Instinct. And common sense. Sometimes, especially in war zones, helicopters land on uneven terrain, so that it is quite possible that the blades would be close enough to the ground to hit someone who is standing nearby. Not to mention, if that blade assembly lets go, you better be as close to the ground as you can. Helicopters are machines, and they do break.

I think its just a natural reaction.
I have seen pilots that have flown for years still do this!
something spinning that fast above my head makes me duck too!!

They're not propellors, they're rotating wings or blades, and they can indeed flex to the point that they can smack you as you walk within their span. One ALWAYS bends over when approaching a chopper with it's blades rotating. I had to pick up and black-bag a dude in
Vietnam who forgot to duck - and there were several separate pieces of him to pick up! Didn't do the chopper a lot of good either...

The blades tilt and in there extreme tilt they will be about head level. The tilt so the pilot can move the helo in one direction or another. the pilot only need hit the stick and the blades will tilt down on one side.

Those rotors would cut your head off in a second, it's a natural instinct to want to stay as far away from them as possible.

Because they are a bunch of wimps that think that they are going to lose their heads...They must be at least 8 feet tall to lose their head by the blades...And you won't be sucked up into them either...The blade wind is blowing downward and people think the worst because they have no control of what they are walking beneith and the natural reaction is to duck down...Wimps...

once when i was working as a ramp rat i was signaling a student pilot upon landing and just before his skids planted. he was bumped by a gust of wind. and if i had not been ducking i would have had my head cut off.
