The questions to ask yourself are "what exactly are you trying to protest" and "what effect do I hope my action will have." Without looking at those questions, there's no way to answer the one stated. Trying to protest the war? Do a recruitment center. Having a problem with global corporations? Well then, chain yourself to a latter-day Enron. Be prepared for publicity, though--in many ways, the object of your action will have to be publicity; hey, apparently you're not getting anyone else to go along with you--and you may have to think of way to generate some in the event that your only "fame" is an entry on a police blotter.

I think it'd be more productive to start a grassroots effort and get people to come around to your cause...promote it and contact your elected officials if you really want to see some sort of change.
Chaining yourself to a building will get you a few minutes of attention and people will shrug your message off because they think you're just another "crazy". You could also be arrested for trespassing in some places.
There are tons of online resources to help you get started. There may already be groups in your area that believe what you do and would love to have your support.

Go to Home Depot buy your self some chains and a lock. go chain yourself. Then I'm sure the police will come cut you free take you to jail and then after booking you put you in a mental hospital for at week to have you analyzed and declared mentally ill.
