How did your parents discipline you as a child?

I know as a child when I did something really bad my dad would scare me by taking off his belt, but he never actually hit me....I think this was an effective means of discipline.......please share a story

i have 800 pages out of the dictionary handwritten from my childhood punnishments... i would have to copy dictionary pages all day.

My parents spanked me, hit me with a belt, my mom screamed at me, they have me restriction, they talked to me. and i was a very good kid. It was insane. My dad was heartbroken about parenting like this, he and my mom were both abused as kids and wanted to break the cycle, but they had no other skills and my mom had much less self-control. As we got older, my parents told us they really regreted doing that and their grandchildren grew up/are growing up with non-violent, respectful, loving guidance. The kids are not only loving, gentle, kind, cooperative, happy, 'high achieving,' smarter, all 6 of them, than most of their peers, but they have a confidence and respect for others that can only come from being well cared for.

Scaring your children is a terrible way to discipline. It doesn't teach you how to act, which is what parents are supposed to be telling you. It tells you what not to do around those folks so you won't get hit or otherwise scared. Scaring your kids is not the same as being respected by your kids.

Lots of people love to say "I was hit" "I was scared" and I'm okay. Well, bull. it's just covering for the parents and identifying with the abuser and claiming that role's power.

When you were little, it wasn't okay, you were hurting and confused when it happened and if you were a delicate soul as so many little boys and girls are, it hurt your self-esteem and made you inhibited.

Kids can be wonderfully raised with loving guidance, consistent consequences that are appropriate to the behavior - that is, that having something to do with the behavior. Because they can very successfuly and much less stressfully raised without threats of violence and actual violence, there is no reason to do this to any child. it is a violation of their human rights and it will perpetuate nations making war as a way to 'solve' problems - because people will believe the lies of their criminal rulers that killing is warranted because these guys are sooooo bad.

I was given "the look". I got one spanking out of fear when I was like 4 years old. I will remember that forever. My sister & brother both go the belt and spankings regularly. I behaved until I got old enough to know how to get around getting caught. I got grounded a few times. They would take car keys from me & tv or phone preveledges from me. I never got to date until I went to college. There was not much time for mischief when I was younger.

Badly. I grew up in the 60s. Mom used a wooden spooon, but the whacks were occasional. Dad used a belt. My last strapping was when I was 16. Not pleasant at that age. Lots of threatening and yelling.

My father took the belt off but he hit me with it. Not too often though. We were hit when disciplined. No "time out" or no Tv time taken away.

When I was a child my parents would sit me down and tell me that I did something wrong, explained to me why what I did was wrong and took away privileges. I was never spanked. It wouldn't have done any good anyway. Taking away privileges worked on me. I would not be allowed to ride my horse for a week or even see her. My brother would have to take care of her and I would hear his complaints. I hated that.

Depending on what I did i would have to get on my knees and hold both arms out balancing heavy books on each arm not being able to kneel on my heels or I would get a good old fashioned a s s beating. Both methods worked with me and my sisters just fine. My dad never spanked us just my mom.

My dad would actually hit me with it when he would take off his belt. He would also fold up a wire hanger and spank me with that, boy did that hurt. My mom would also spank me with a bamboo paddle, or they would make me go and pick off my own switch (u can never go right with that.) They would also stick me in the corner. I always had kinda sucky punishments.

It would depend on what I did. I was spanked very few times. Other times a grounding. I didn't need much discipline. I was a pretty good kid.

He throws me out of the window many times sometimes night tym (thank god its only 7" high) then locked the door...,then i'm gonna be spending the night out.....others..., tied me on a tree w/ red ants on it....,laid me on my tummy then w/ candle droplets on my legs....., very bad experienced though.


Tears clouds up in my eyes while typing this...i'm a very bad tempered person now.....never been to a counselor....somehow i manage how to control a lil' of my temper coz i have kids on my own now.I really don't want them to suffer the way i did under my father's arm...so THAT'S MY STORY......

I only got a spanking once, which I just blew off. The most effective was taking away priviledges!
