First you should relize that being depressed is almost normal. Almost everyone i know at work and school and anywhere else has drepression or did at one time. I my self am very depressed and i have problems trusting people. I took me over a year to get comfortable at work enough to start talking to people and particapating in jokes and such. I do think you should see a counsler, they are much better then docters and they don't have the ablity to put you on any meds. You can take as much time as you need to learn to trust them, its their job to earn you trust so don't worry. I have been seeing my counsler for a couple of months and all we take about is how my week went and really nothing else i just sit there and blab on and on about anything and everything. We even just sit in silence for periods of time. If you find you are having trouble finding trust in the person, see someone else until you find that one you can open up to. I hide my depression for years and it got so bad that i started to fail in school and start thinking about suicide, i still don't take to my counsler about this, but i tell my mom when i am in a good mood and she takes care of it for me and my counsler never metions it at all because she knows how i feel about my thoughts, i would rather have them hidden. It may take time to find trust in someone, but it is possible. You can get out of depression without having to take meds that have nasty side affects and may not even work. You could waste hundreds trying to find that med. that should work when you don't even need it. Though if you think you may have some mental condition like me, where depression is part of your gentic makeup, i would recomend prozac, you would need a docter for that, so if you want talk to your family docter about it.
If you need someone to talk to e-mail me, i know most of what you are going through and i want to help you, sometimes talking to someone you don't know and can't see works. I share more with people on this site then i do with my folks or counsler because i don't feel judged.
Good Luck!

A physician is incapable of determining whether you have depression and to what extent. Only YOU know how you really feel. In a case such as yours, there are two things a physician can do --
1) Issue an "official" diagnosis of depression (which may or may not be correct)
2) Prescribe effective antidepressant meds or anxiolytics
Quite honestly, I get tired of reading advice to "go see a doctor." People say that because they have no knowledge of physiology or pharmacology. You ask whether there are other ways to go about tackling this problem. Yes! For mild depression, St. John's Wort is quite effective and available OTC at any drugstore or health food store. For mild anxiety you should give the herb Kava Kava a try.
Now, if these don't work for you, it's an indication that you may have more severe depression/anxiety. You could treat yourself but for the fact that prescription drug laws give physicians the power of the prescription pad. So, if the herbs do not help, THEN make an appointment to see a very good psychiatrist. Try and get a reference.
You know, Marlon Brando saw numerous psychiatrists over his adult life. In his autobiography he commented that the majority of them are a bunch of nuts.

At least you are spending time with your family and friends that's a big plus......social anxiety is common for a lot of us, and more so for the young because of the pressure.....read about some herbal remedies or go to a health food store and ask them I did the herbal way at first but I am way beyond that, be careful what you take......Try deep breathing meditation...yoga...you can get tapes on both at the library......Hun I'm 45 and there are times I don't want to be around anyone, but I have been bipolar since 1990....and I do know it's easy for people to say get a hobby do this go do that but they're not in your shoes it's totally different

I also suffer from depression. I did see the doctor and am on medication. There are other ways to deal with it. As corny as it sounds, exercise is not just good for the body, but also the sole. My doctor told me the best thing I could do for myself was to start walking. It gives you time to think. You can listen to music or just watch what is going on around you. I am not saying that it is easy, but you will feel good about doing something good for yourself. It doesn't even have to be walking, anything that gets the heart rate up will work. There is nothing wrong with wanting to just spend time with your family and friends. Don't push yourself and don't beat yourself up. Move at your own pace and you can make an improvement on how you feel. It won't happen overnight. Take advantage of the "good" days and rest on the "bad" days. If you ever think about harming yourself then you need to seek professional help. Good Luck

I have found the best thing for me is doing what feels right for me. Not what others think I should be doing. This has provided me with much more feelings of ease then any drug that I have taken or doing what others think I should do. I have found that when times are right I will do other things. I find I spend alot of time alone and found that it really works. People always say I should do more but I am happest doing what I want when I want. Even if this means spemdingtime alone. I can decide what is best for me whether they agree with it or not.People think I "should be doing" More. What is "should" anyhow, but what others think. They can have their own judgements, just like I can do what I want. If this makes you more comfortable do it. Don't care what others think.

Well going to the doctor is the best way. You could have something that you cant control. You may have a chemical imbalance. There are different kinds of them and medication can help. But to do that you have to see a doctor. Just try the doctor thing if you don't like what they have to say then just leave. But the doctor can help a lot. Believe me I know.

If you're really against going to a doctor, try taking St.John's Wort. It is an herbal anti-depressant. Remove negative people from your life because they pull you down. Surround yourself with positive energy. Sometimes the best thing to do is to meet new people. Your friends may have you in a rut. If you can move to a place where no one knows you and you have a chance to start over, I find it helps.

First off, Ignore the ignorant people that responded. You should seek counseling before you go to a psychiatrist because all they do is give you drugs that have side affects that can be worse than the depression. Think about how much your depression/lack of motivation or anxiety effects your daily life. If you feel like there is a need to change to be happy, seek group therapy or a counselor. If you are under 18: Please wait it out. A lot of adolescents have growing pains that are mistaken or misdiagnosed by this med-crazy country as depression. If you feel like hurting yourself, please tell someone. But you don't really sound like a person in that state of mind to me. Please take care of yourself, and I hope you feel better.

In the event that you are high school aged (or younger) go and talk to a teacher. They can get you an appointment with the school counselor, which is a good start.
