Quite often, none. If there is serious pain then morphine, vicodin, tylenol, tylenol with codeine, etc. can be used. It depends on which bone and how serious a break.
Once the bone has been set, it really doesn't hurt all that much. Unless they have to do manipulations, there isn't that much additional pain.
Interestingly enough, the body produces some pretty strong pain relievers on its own when you break a bone.

There's several different medications that a hospital may prescribe for a broken bone including Lortab, Vicodin, Lorcet, Norco, Darvocet N-100, Ultram, Tylenol #3 with Codeine....
The problem with all of these medications is that they're narcotics and highly addictive.

i had vicodin and woooo wee! it'll make you loopy. it don't take away your pain it just makes you forget you ever had any in the first place. but its nothing compared to morphine, which is not a pain killer they will give you out of the hospital.

Often they will give you codeine, or sodium diclofenac if your stomach can handle it. If it's really bad they give you morphine.
