No your harddrive has already been formatted if your operating system is up and running.. Just install PM and follow the instructions....
Now if it a vergin cpt that has not been set up and configured, set you bios to boot from a cd-rom if PM is on a cd and put it in and restart the computer.. I will automatically boot PM and you can format and set up your partitions fro there...

Okay, this is an extremely easy question, the answer is YES.

Why? Normally you would not have to format your Hard Drive, you would simply use a boot disk and create a partition, then format it. But partition magic needs to be installed on your Hard Drive before you can use it, therefore it must be formated to store data.

If you have any important data, I suggest you back it up, because formating erases all data.

If you have an operating system already installed and want to add another, you will not need to partition the hard drive. Just make sure you defragment your drive before you use partition magic.

I dont think your HDD was formatted, I think the FS tables or indexes got a bit messed up. If the Drive E is accessable but empty. You can try recovery software like "File Scavanger" or NTFS undelete.
