It is easy to get CA state (temporary) disability. All you need is a letter from your MD (psychiatrist) or psychologist. Either one can guide you through the process.
It's much harder to get SSI or SSDI. The federal government (Social Security Administration) has much stricter rules and the process is much more involved, and can take up to two years, usually with a couple of denials and reapplications.

Yes, but in Florida. In Florida all you have to do is go to the social security office and file a claim. If you have not worked for enough points, they give you SSI instead of Social Security. It is good to go prepare with any paper or letter from any doctor you have seen. Or just go with the Doctors name, and they will find the information themselves. After you fill out the form there, you have to wait a few months, in the interim, they will send you to see one of their psychiatrist. You must keep that appointment. The Doctor will ask you a few questions, and then you will have to wait again. Usually they will let you know by 2 to 3 months after you have applied. If the person is mentally ill, they will ask you to pick a person you trust to send your checks to. If your illness has been for more than 2 years, your first check will include those 2 years of payment all at once. After that you will get your check every month. I don't thing it will vary that much from state to state. Another thing is that they will give the person medicaid, so all your Doctors are free, also if you don't have family to help they give food stamps also.

California should be like any other state contact your local social security office and fill out an application and get a copy of your medical records and send it in. Either go to the site below or call this number from 7am-7pm EST 1-800-772-1213. Good luck! I don't know of any State disability it is all filed with the Government.

Wow, n2bateyou2000, that was a little harsh.

Personally, I have been out of work for 5 months now. I have not applied for disability, but our finances are running low so it may come to that.

Don't let what n2bateyou2000 wrote upset you. He does not understand what it is like to have these types of issues. I can't stand those morons that come back with "Get over it". Wouldn't it be nice if it were that easy!!!!

Many diabilities are genetic, but it is unlikely to be a single, or single set of gene's. Each disability is due to an absence, abnormality, or excess of genes. Typically genes related to the disability (ie, a disability with sight, would be based on genes that control sight, while the genes that cause diabities are the genes that effect sugar.

No, but I have experience in seeing my tax dollars go to the "mentally challenged" every payday, who work our system for benefits they dont deserve. How about you stop trying to drain the system, stop feeling sorry for yourself, and get yourself a JOB. Someplace you go to earn money on a regular basis. Develope some coping skills and stop blaming the world for your problems, stop holding out your hand like we owe you something.

Oh yeah, and have a nice day.
