According to a study, Serotonin (a neurochemical, kind of like the brain's hormone) levels are low when you are depressed, Triptophan increases Serotonin levels, starchy foods help you produce/have Triptophan. They found that the subjects of the study craved starches more than other foods. Unfortunately the starches that are most handy are Potato chips and the like, which are high in fat. Therefore they found that depressed people gain weight because they inadvertently consume more fats with the starches they need.
Other studies show that people who's brain chemicals are out of balance improve with exercise. bellakoukla_28, shawn m, First L, mastermind & Belinda E have the right idea about exercising. A balanced diet is also very helpful.

I get depressed, and I turn to my comfort food (Doritos), then I feel guilty for having eaten so much, so I get more depressed, so I end up eating more, which makes me feel guiltier, which makes me feel more depressed, and on and on I go.
Two things I found were helpful. The first is to start calculating the nutrition in what I'm eating and set nutritional goals. Then do the research to find foods that fulfill my craving AND meet my nutritional goals. I get so wrapped up in the research that I break out of the depression, and I'm better off for the research I've done.
The other thing was to eat spicy food -- as hot as I can take it, then 2 steps more. Searingly hot spicy food kicks off an endorphin rush that breaks the cycle and makes me feel really good.

I can go either way. Sometimes I eat more than usual and sometimes I am so depressed and feel horrible about myself that I CANT eat anything. See your doctor so maybe you can work through your depression.

Yes, I do eat a lot when I'm depressed. Really, that is when we should be getting up and doing something, i.e. exercise, read a good book, etc. But, unfortunately, I eat a lot.

yes I do. I have that problem too. So I started to put some low calorie food on the accessable area. Like carrot and celery. And I drink a lot of no calories fluid to help myself feeling full.
I am also take on exercise which helps you to get out of depression.
Also, take on some hobbies that will drag your mind off something else.

Yes--bad foods too--mostly when I'm stressed. Then I start breaking out and I realize I have to stop eating junk food.
Was super stressed today and had burger and chili cheese fries. I ate it all too. Delicious.
