some symbols remain, some change, some get replaced by others.....it all changes with time....study it if it interests you.

Adrian Frutiger has an interesting book about symbols I think. He was a well known swiss typographist back in the good ol hand made days.

Symbols can change depending on the groups needs. The swastika was originally from India, but now is associated with the Nazis. The Iron Cross was used by the Knights Templar and was a religious symbol, but now is seen being used for motorcycles. (eg West Coast Choppers)

If you're referring to religious symbols, it depends on the religion. Some symbols are even used by totally different religions (take catholisism and wicca both using the five and six sided stars as an example).
