The Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCS) used to all be part of one company -- AT&T. Then AT&T was split up (1984) and each of the companies like New York Tel (which became NYNEX, then turned into Verizon), Pacific Bell, Southwestern Bell...etc. each operated individually. Lots of people still refer to these big utilities as being "Bell System" because they were all part of one big family. Interestingly, when AT&T broke up, they formed two research groups -- Bell Labs and Bellcore. Bell Labs handled long distance research and Bellcore handled local equipment research. Bell Labs turned into Lucent and Bellcore turned into Telcordia.

So, long story short, there is no Bell conglomerate anymore. They all are separate operating companies.

No. Verizon is the current handle for what used to be GT&E, which was the principal competitor to Ma Bell before the company was broken up.
