she has a large spot in one ear, it looks like a scab, and is quite dark. We thought she had mites a few months ago and got some medicine, but it seemed to irrate her ears, and she scratched more. Any suggestions?

when you put the meds in her ears did you take a q-tip and clean them out.. you don't just leave the drops in there. you know how it feels when you have water in your ears.. that is how it feels to the cat when you put drops in her ears..
leave it in there and rub the outside of her ears a little bit to let it go down in and then clean it back out... do it a few times and her ears should be clean and free of mites.
if she does have mites she will be scratching and rubbing her head on the floor alot.. but you should clean there ears often anyway.. that is a spot that they can't get to..
good luck..

Certainly sounds like she has serious ear mite infection and they will not go away without medicinal teatment-if you did not keep the medicine in the refrigerator if it said to then it is now not effective anymore and you'll have to take to the vet again. although ear mites do not suck blood but live on ear wax and other stuff in the ears if not gotten rid of they can cause a secondary bacterial infection and even cause deafness.Besides the kitten is miserable to have all this crawling going on in her ears-just imagine- if there are other animlas in the house they too will have to be treated. The kitten should also have a flea treamtment BUT MAKE SURE SAFE for the Kitten for some mites can be along the tail, feet and so on>I would take the kitten to the Vet and have the First treatment gibven in the office so you can observe to see the best way to get into the ears-mention that you stopped the previous for irritated the ears-probably scratched more for the medication irritated the mites and they moved more than usual.

I just got a kitten as well and as soon as i got him into the car I saw he had little dark spots/blotches in his ears. i took him back into the shelter to have him looked at and they are earmites. What you're seeing is the wax that the ear is producing from being irritated. The mights are white/clearish and the size of the tip of a pencil. You should probably take him to the vet. Mine prescribed me drops and told me to use a q-tip with baby oil or olive oil to clean his ears out. The mites breath through pores on their skin and this will suffocate them. Mine also seems irritated, from the drops and the oil, but i'd rather him be annoyed with me for a few days than possibly get an infection from the mites. Hope you're kitty is feeling better soon.

Ear mites look like an extra large amount of ear wax but it is brown or black and if you were to take a sample and look at in under a micro scope it would move. If it is only one spot in one ear and it hasn't gotten worse then it is probably a sore in the ear from scratching and with every cut when it heals it becomes itchy. Just try to prevent her from scatching it and put some polysporn(sp) on it.

Some cats just get allergies too - both my cats do. There can be something in your home that's causing it (there are many plants that are bad for cats). Allergies can also be caused from cheap food. With my cats it's usually scratching the ears, around the face, or by the tail.

Either way, it can't hurt to have your vet check cause if the problem gets worse it's actually going to cost you a lot more money to treat (not to mention your cat could have a lifetime of ear problems).

That could be a scab from her scratching. You most likely did not get rid of the mites or they came back.
Just put 4-5 drops of mineral or baby oil in her ears and massage the base of her ears. Don't put too much or it will go down her throat...and just clean the rest of it with a cotton ball. Do NOT use Qtips ever!
If she gets spots like that all over here where she is losing fur then it might be ringworms(a fungus not worms)...

If its inside her ear, she might have mites. Usually ear mites don't cause one large scab tho. Theres obviously somethimng there tho. You sould take her to te vet.

P.s. - If she has sores in her ears, the ear mite medicine won't be comfrtable. PLus cats hate when someone messes with their ears. If she has ear mites, don't stop using the medicine without the vet saying so, you might worsen the problem.

Check with the vet. Our indoor/outdoor cat gets "dirty" ears every once in a while that itch, I think it's from mites and whatnot. Let the vet know it seems to irritate her ears, they might be able to recommend something better.

if she has black specs in her ears even on the thin part then she has ear mites, just go to the store and get some bacitraciin or triple antibiotic cream and put in in her ear then rub her ear around a bit.

It sounds like she does, but she could also have a secondary infection caused from the scratching. She needs an ear check by her doc.
