Puerto Rico has English and Spanish as official languages. Given the history of the United States and the current population mix, I don't see any reason not to have both for the rest of the country.

Official language WHERE? What a diversity of answers--but that's what this Q&A is about, isn't it? How absurd to suggest, (if it wasn't a joke), that English should be the offical language worldwide. If serious, this is the kind of person who will ensure that we NEVER all get along. Hey, man! You know what I'm sayin' man? Talk like me, or don't talk, man! (With a few f---s in between.) I have a little concern with people who come to this country, & work in jobs where communication is ESSENTIAL, yet never seem to understand a word I'm saying. I visited Mexico often, & took classes in Spanish not just out of courtesy, but because I wanted to be able to have dialoges with people there, & this truly enriched me. Language isn't the "big" problem about getting along. The problem is assuming everyone should speak, believe, & do as we do. Was this question sincere???

That would be virtually impossible, since in Florida they have found at least 36 different dialects of Spanish origin. It has become so difficult to translate as a result that that is why the issue of English being the "official" language came about.

English should be the official language, and as a first step all these people should at least learn textbook Spanish.

I think Spanish is the official language of Mexico. Having the US/Mexico border fence in place will help to deliniate the territorial boundaries of both countries, which, coupled with GPS, should help citizens of both countries to stay inside their own borders. Learning a foreign language should be a choice, not something that's forced on you in your home country. If, however, you should choose to move somewhere else, be courteous enough to make a good-faith effort to learn the new language...

That's ridiculous ! ! ! Why not just say let the official language be Chinese, or Japanese, or Porteguese, or any other of the millions of Americans that come from other countries. That's what makes America. All the different nationalities. And we've all learned to speak english to be able to communicate in one language. Make sense?
God Bless America....(that's in English by the way?)

English should just be the official language of the world. We are the biggest business country in the world and everyone wants to trade with us so most countries teach English in there schools from like 2nd grade and up. I have been to Italy and Germany and almost everyone spoke fluent English.

No, not as long as our original Constitution remains written in English.

If Spanish ever becomes the official language of the land, I can guarantee you we will no longer be the United States of America. And people will have to get their freebies somewhere else.

Definitely not. Our founding fathers started it all in English and it should stay that way. Should another country change their official language? I don't even think someone would ask if they should.

No, because I thought we already had one... but that would be funny... i would laugh for DAYS!!!!! there are many other languages that would be SO MUCH HARDER to learn... for instance Swahili.

"No.atleast not in America."

The irony of the above statement is that Mexico is named well... "Mexico"... and its language Spanish is well... called "Spanish."

Not to mention... we don't live in England over here in AMERICA.
