Even with a taser gun (illegally), you could get robbed and have the taser used on you. A lot of people get shot with their own guns that they bought for protection.
Better off taking a class in martial arts.

First things first.. A 16 year old can not possess any weapon for defense in any state to the best of my knowledge. Consider a chang in your routines, or self defense training at a local martial arts studio.
Lets clarify...
Taser is a device that fires two darts at ranges between 15 and 35 feet (the 15" model is legal in most states for civilians to own and possess in thier home or business). This is with out a doubt the most effective weapon I have ever expereinced. And considering the alternative - it is safer than a gun!
Stun Gun is a device that transfers an electrical charge from 100,000 volts and 900,000 volts into a person when the device touches thier skin or clothing. A fairly effective weapon for stunning an attacker to create distance, not submission..

In New York State it's illegal tp have a taser no matter how old you are. Only police can carry and/or use them.
