Well, i think that you could be a science smart person without being geeky. not all smart kids look and act geeky or that kinda stuff.sometimes the kids that you least except to be smart are and stuff. so maybe you should listen to your teacher and parents and you could go less if you don't want to do everything they want. really it is your decision.

It seems to me the issue is ** WHY ** don't you want to attend science fairs and get involved in other extracurricular academics?

If it's because the topics don't spark any enthusiasm, you just happen to be good at them, then explain to your folks and your teacher that you recognize the value of good grades but this isn't where your heart is, and you'd rather see someone with genuine interest get the recognition for their efforts.

But if the reason is because you think it's geeky, or you're worried that your friends will start making fun of you, then ask yourself this: What would Bill Gates do? He was a science geek who grew up to be the wealthiest man in the world.

Now, what do you want to be 'when you grow up'? Does science fit into that picture at all? If so, the smartest investment you can make is in yourself, and participating in Science Fairs, clubs and other things will put you on the right track to a very successful future.

Will kids make fun of you? Possibly. Will it hurt? Yep. Will those people be around in 10 years when you've graduated college and need a job? Probably not. So does it matter what they think? Right now you're saying yes, but in 10 years, you won't even remember the names of half of them.

As hard as it is to overlook what your friends might say, follow your heart. If you were very talented in music or gymnastics or any of the 'cool' activities, your chums would be encouraging you to go for it. So if science interests you, if you think it's something you want to pursue in your life plan, then take a deep breath and just do it. Your true friends will see that this is where your interest lies and after some initial teasing, believe me, you WILL have their admiration.

Good luck, hon!

If it's a requirement, you should do it. It doesn't have to be a 3 month preparation. Get a good idea that's easier and different from everyone else's! If you're doing so well, and it's not required, I'd let my kid take a break!! The only thing is - don't let that idol time become a time for you to get on the wrong track or in with the wrong kids. "Idol hands are the devil's workshop". Read something interesting, anything that is constructive or positive so they can keep their trust in you.

Do you NOT want to do these things because they're "geeky"?

Maybe YOU can be the proof that being good at this stuff doesn't make you a geek!

Suppressing part of who you are because you're afraid of a stereotype seems like a really self-defeating thing to do.

Don't let anyone push you into anything, you are still young and impressionable. It can change the course of your life and you should only do what you want. If you have an aptitude for a certain thing however, you should at least try it out once if you have the slightest interest.

Yeah, middle school is not hard, either is high school. Wait until college and then talk to me. You are not that smart, considering the 7th grade curriculum.

Thanks
