we do not have an official language. this was debated by the constitutional congress and our founding fathers felt it inappropriate since we were a country made up of immegrants, just as we are today. by the way, your likely the child of an immigrant.

Businesses cater to Spanish speakers, because they make more money by catering to them. Even if English was the official language, you would still hear businesses' automated answering services say press 1 for English, press 2 for Spanish, because the business world knows that option means bigger profits. Secondly, most first generations from any country will not be fluent English speakers, but most get by... the children of these Spanish speaking immigrants generally are very fluent with English and have learned to assimilate to our culture. The first generations like the convenience of using a language they feel more comfortable with and there is nothing wrong with a business offering that convenience of bilingual staff members. My next point is at one point our country had more German speakers than English speakers.... the children of those immigrants picked up English fine and became fine upstanding Americans. So accept reality... learn your freaking Spanish and get that good job... or don't learn Spanish and make less than you otherwise could make... your choice.

I'm not. official languages are for countries that have an official culture. we don't. Yeah it sucks that you have to pick up spanish. but the INTERNATIONAL language is english. so anyone who wants a good job needs to know that before spanish. Almost every other country is bilingual. I went to an american school and had to learn french, not spanish. but eventually I learned spanish too. I think it would be a good idea to make english the official language, but it's still a good idea to have a multilingual culture, as almost every other country does.

English IS the official language of the United States: it just isn't the ONLY language.

You don't have to learn Spanish to go to a good school. I've never heard that Yale or Harvard requires all their students to be bilingual. You can go to any school you want if you know English.

You don't have to learn Spanish to get a good job: it just makes you a more valuable employee. Many top paid computer geeks, lawyers, doctors and people in other high-paid fields are not biligual. You can get any job you want if you know English, except maybe that of a translator.

Growing up in Michigan, many people learned French in school since we were so close to Canada. I never learned French and it didn't effect me in my schooling or job market. Nor should not learning Spanish effect you in your schooling or in seeking a job.

Nobody says you have to learn a second language. If you don't want to, then don't, and don't complain about those who do. They're smarter than the rest of us: they know everything twice!

Now please stop using not learning Spanish as a crutch, go to school, get good grades and get a job!!!

Besides going to school for Intl. relations or getting a job in South America, why would you have to learn Spanish to go to a good school and/or get a good job in America?

I know this might shock you but there is a country in North America that speaks two, yes two, languages English and French and it's called Canada. Now I know that may sound radical but guess what they've been doing it for 200 years and they are still here. Amazing isn't it. Who would have thought.

Most of the great silent majority is on your side. Unfortunately the politicians could care less about what the citizens want that put then in power, instead they want the Spanish vote.

I am referring to both parties. the Democrats want them as potential voters and the Republicans are afraid they will lose at the polls if they don't suck up to the Spanish community.

I just finished reading an article in this week about a poll among the legal Mexicans in the US only 19% cared about the issue of illegal aliens.

It's because this country was formed to avoid giving preferential treatment to anyone. At least in theory....

I suggest you learn it, because it might come in handy. You never know, you might be very thankful someday that you were forced into learning another language.

I am completely with you. With all of the Republicans running the country, it is only certain that we, as Americans, are losing the country we once knew. It is sad that everything has become so politically correct that our students cannot even wear a shirt that represents our country by having the American Flag or God Bless America on it. I stand beside you 100%!!!!
