It was in the days when there were no last names persay.In otherwords Peter was the son of John,so today he would be Peter Johnson..get it? John and James were the sons of Zebedee,if they were Irish their names would be John and James McZebedee.Jesus of Nazareth in Irish would be Josh O' Nazareth.
A person was identified by either his father or his occupation,like Smith(blacksmith),Clark(a royal clerk)Cooper(a barrel maker)etc etc.

If you are referring to the authors of the Bible, they didn't have last names. Usually they went by (name) son of (name). Sometimes, (name) of (city/region).
The apostle Paul was originally known as Saul of Tarsus.
In small communities, this was usually sufficient.

they did. ie, the prophet joshua was "joshua son of nun" and is called that several times in the bible. in biblical times, that was a full name.
