Depends on which religion you are talking about. Alot of religions have a hell and/or a heaven or some kind of eqivilant. But from my limited experience in Christian religion, I would say that absolutely not. From my understanding of a lot of relgions don't even require that you be of any faith or even have had contact with religion and still don't believe you will not go to hell so long as you are a "good person". Hope I have enlightened you a little.

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
John 17:3.
How ever this does not answer the root of the question. To assume that those who have never heard of God will be punnished for that which they did not have the oportunity to accept is saying God is not just or merciful. The scriptures tell us otherwise.
I would refer you to 1 peter 3:18-20 which says
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
Here we see that while Christ awaited the three days for his resurection he went and preached unto the "spirits in prision" These were spirits of individuals who lived wickadly during the time of Noah but who did not listen. Even they were given a chance to hear the truth since we have to assume that Noah wasn't able to talk to eveyone. So yes everyone will have a chance. Wether in this life or in the time before the resurection and second comming of Christ.
So yes you have to know God but that doesn't mean that the end of this life is the end of our oportunities to do so.

The bible says that the Lord will not return to earth unless all ears have heard his word. This means that he will not return until everyone in the world has heard about Him. So, they will not go to hell if they believe when they hear about him and do what he asks. Babies do not count. In the Bible you are innocent until you reach a certain age. Which is the age of 13 so babies will go to heaven regardless.

Most religions state that you need to believe and there is no excuse for not doing so. What about retarded people? What about Hitler who was a believing Catholic - does he go to Heaven? If God is really caring and almighty, why does he allow so much suffering in this world? Why did he let his son suffer? Why was that needed to save us?
You are absolutely right: It does not make a whole lot of sense...

So Far, we Know that GOD Provided TWO WAYS to get Saved.
The Old Testament (contract).
The New Testament(contract).
The HOLY SPIRIT is the ONE Who Saves you.
People in the Past Know about Spiritual Things.
Mayby GOD Saved them another Way?
I wouldn't put Nothing GOOD Past GOD Almighty.
(all Human Beings who Leave the Earth for GOOD befor Reaching the Age of Accountability----ARE in HEAVEN).

God speaks of those not under the law(never heard)
they will be judged on a belief in a supernatural force and more a feeling of good and bad. God will make a way just as He made those who never met Him.

the word hell comes from the Hebrew word Shalom which when translated means the earth. the bible says the wages of sin are death, and if you die you have paid for your sins. those who do not have a relationship with god, or yah ( Hebrew ) Jehovah ( English ) or his son Jesus Christ, will be judged according to their hearts and mind. those whose good acts out way the bad will inherit gods kingdom, where ever that may be.

WRONG!
They would NOT go to hell if not presented the Plan of Salvation and rejected it.
Similarly, all idiots, Low IQ and Infants Worldwide will NOT go to hell.
